BOOM. Newmarket did what we hoped and threw up a good hoss' or two on the opening day of the Craven meeting.

We've picked out some lines you may have missed from a busy afternoon on the Rowley Mile.

A horse for your tracker 🧐

1.50 Newmarket – Summerghand

David O'Meara would have been cursing his luck as Summerghand somehow failed to get up on the Rowley Mile.

Stuck behind a couple on the rail, Danny Tudhope did well to even bustle him up for a desperate second.

He was well-backed (12s into 8s) and the team clearly fancied him here. Hopefully the handicapper doesn't go too wild and even if he gets a couple of pounds he still looks like one to watch on his next couple of starts.

O'Meara is in good nick and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him entered up sooner rather than later.

A horse on the up 📈

3.00 Newmarket – Kick On

John Gosden's three-year-old is going places – albeit a slow and steady upward curve, rather than a rapid rise.

Anything this colt did at two was a bonus and he should come on leaps and bounds this season with a patient Gosden pulling the strings from above.

Oisin Murphy grabbed the rail here and one by one the likes of Western Australia and Walkinthesand failed to get past.

He looks a tricky horse to place in the immediate future. This was a furlong further than the Guineas trip, but he doesn't look a Derby contender just yet.

Would he be seen to best effect over the Rowley Mile or is Epsom his end goal? It wouldn't be a surprise to see him miss both and Gosden continue with the slow and steady approach.

Big punt landed 💰

3.35 Newmarket – Qabala (7s into 10-3f)

There was some move for this supposed Roger Varian second string on course.

The money came thick and fast. 7s went, 5s went and soon there was 3-1 on most boards.

It was bang on too. Despite a shaky start and a bit of trouble in running, when the gap opened up she scooted home under David Egan.

She shot into 1000 Guineas favouritism. 66s were available before the off and that soon became 12s, before some went as short as 5s.

That may be a slight over reaction, but in a weak looking Fillies' Classic, there's not much to worry about as of yet.

I would also note how keen Varian was to continue to talk up his other runner Mot Juste, who did hit the front very early.
