ERIK TEN HAG's Manchester United are planning a £25million transfer scoop for Benfica ace Goncalo Ramos, SunSport can exclusively reveal.

But the Red Devils will have to act fast as Newcastle and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich are also interested.

Meanwhile, Bruno Fernandes has admitted he was angry when a 2019 move to Tottenham Hotspur failed to materialise when he was at Sporting Lisbon.

Fernandes told The Athletic: "The president [Frederico Varandas] spoke with me but he spoke with me on the wrong day. It was the day after they decided to refuse the offer from Tottenham and I was really angry. Luckily for me, the manager [Marcel Keizer] was the right one at the right time.

“At the beginning of January, my agent said, ‘You don’t need to worry, because any time I bring you a club, it will be a dream club for you’. He knew that the dream club was Manchester United.”

Eriksen 'great' to be compared to Scholes

Christian Eriksen has played down comparisons to Manchester United greats Paul Scholes and Juan Mata.

The Dane, who joined the Red Devils on a free transfer in the summer, was lucky enough to play against Scholes.

Eriksen told Politiken: “It’s football in a nutshell and shows how fast it is.

“Of course, it is great to be compared to them, but you create your own ways and your own name.

“I was lucky that I managed to play against Paul Scholes.

“He was a good player, so I’m happy to be compared to him.”

    PSV open to selling Gakpo

PSV Eindhoven have admitted they would be open to selling Cody Gakpo if a lucrative offer arrived.

Gakpo was linked with a move to Manchester United during the summer transfer window.

PSV’s director of football told Voetbal International: “I can say with my hand on my heart that there has been no offer for Cody to which the management or the supervisory board have said: ‘We must do this’.

“We did state that if there were certain offers, we would have to sell.

“Not only from a financial point of view, but also because agreements were made with the Gakpo camp before my time”

McTominay could line up in back three for Scotland

Steve Clarke faces a defensive selection headache ahead of his Scotland side's match against Ukraine tonight – seeing Scott McTominay line up in defence.

You have to wonder if McTominay will start feeling a bit fed up deputising in defence for Scotland, given he's having a decent run of games in midfield for Manchester United.

He's started the last four games – all wins – in defensive midfield for the Reds but he offers Scotland the ability to build play out from the back in this system and his long strides help cover ground that others perhaps couldn't when long balls are played in behind.

    Man Utd eye Benfica ace

Erik ten Hag is eyeing Benfica ace Goncalo Ramos to boost Manchester United’s firepower.

Ramos, 21, has hit eight goals in 12 games this season, prompting United to make contact with his representatives.

He is valued around £25million by Benfica, which United would not go above — despite the player reportedly having a £100m release clause.

The Portuguese Under-21 star was linked to Newcastle in the last window as Eddie Howe searched for a striker — and he is also being tracked by Bayern Munich.

However, United boss Ten Hag does not have a big transfer pot for January, having gone over budget this summer. But there is still recognition of the urgent need for another forward.

Injuries to Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford have exposed how short they are in that department, with Cristiano Ronaldo, 37, their only recognised and fit striker.

    MORNING UTD FANS

Manchester United are leading the race for Flamengo ace Joao Gomes.

In fact, United are stuck in a bidding war with rivals Liverpool over the player.

Gomes, 21, has played 19 times for the Rio side and is highly rated in his Brazil.

“Not only from a financial point of view, but also because agreements were made with the Gakpo camp before my time."

However, United chief executive Richard Arnold is not keen on more transfers in the January transfer window.

United manager Erik ten Hag, on the other hand, wants more additions in the winter.

That is according to The Athletic, who claim that Arnold wants to wait until summer for further business.

And Bruno Fernandes says Old Trafford is big enough for both him and Cristiano Ronaldo.

And he refuses to blame fellow attacker Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United for his dramatic dip in form last season.

Fernandes said: “Most of my assists last season were for him, so I don’t think (it is fair).

“I just had a poor season in terms of my own numbers. I don’t think it is about Cristiano.

“Before he came I was taking the penalties but I had two chances to take them last season and I missed both. So I cannot blame Cristiano for taking penalties, especially when he scores them.”

    Fernandes slams critics

Bruno Fernandes says Old Trafford is big enough for both him and Cristiano Ronaldo.

And he refuses to blame fellow attacker Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United for his dramatic dip in form last season.

Fernandes scored 29 goals and contributed 19 assists in his first 53 Premier League games after arriving from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 in a £55million deal.

But his last 40 top-flight appearances have yielded only eight strikes and he has set up just seven goals.

In most of the games that saw his numbers drop, Ronaldo was also on the pitch – having made his return from Juventus in 2021.

Fernandes said: “Most of my assists last season were for him, so I don’t think (it is fair).

“I just had a poor season in terms of my own numbers. I don’t think it is about Cristiano.

Malacia not 'stressed' by Shaw competition

Manchester United summer signing Tyrell Malacia was not "stressed" about competing with Luke Shaw for the starting left-back spot.

The 23-year-old says he knew what his "qualities are" and knew his time would come.

And when he was called upon by Erik ten Hag, he took it.

Malacia told Rijnmond: "I wasn’t stressed then. I know what my qualities are.

"I knew that, in the end, I would be a good competitor for that position.

"If I got that one chance, I would have to grab it.

"It didn’t work out (in the first two games), so then the manager made the choice to let me start against Liverpool.

"Then you have to turn up."

“I was the top scorer of Barca with Aubameyang. I love competition and I don’t walk away from it. I enjoy being at Barca."

Fernandes changes style when Dean referees

Bruno Fernandes has revealed one of the secrets behind his uncanny ability to find space on the pitch – he marks the ref.

The Manchester United playmaker says his playing style involves finding "dead zones" – which are often the areas occupied by the match official.

Fernandes, 28, told The Athletic: "I call these the ‘referee zone' as nobody marks the referee.

"Sometimes, this is what the coaches say to players who play between the lines, or the wingers who want to come inside, or the striker when he wants to drop.

"Of course, sometimes the positions are different because it can be a counter-attack, for example.

“It also depends on the way an official referees the game. Mike Dean, for example, ran very centrally, which was probably for him better to see the game.

"But for us as a No 10, that cannot be our position, so you have to find out where you can go.”

    Fernandes on Ten Hag

Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes praised manager Erik ten Hag for bringing some disciple at Old Trafford.

Fernandes told The Athletic: “First of all, he has an idea. He has a style. You have to follow his rules. He is strict on that. And I like that. He has brought discipline, which is something I think we missed in the past. Everyone must be on the same page.

“That is what Pep [Guardiola] and [Jurgen] Klopp have been doing for years, because they have stability in the club and in the way they choose the transfer market and build the team, which is really important for them to get the rewards.

“I saw the manager say in a press conference that we do not want to bring players just for the sake of it, we want to bring the right players for what we want to do. It is something the club needs.

“We still have a margin to improve and he needs time to get the most out of us with his idea of playing. I believe we will get to the point with him where we are established as a team and everyone is on the same page”
