JOEY BARTON has admitted he was wrong to call Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp a "giant German cheerleader" with a "terrible record".

The Liverpool-born former Manchester City star, now manager of League One Fleetwood Town, has retracted his comments and said he was wrong.

Klopp guided the Reds to Champions League victory last season and the Merseysiders are clear at the top of the Premier League this season as they bid to end a 30-year wait for title glory.

Barton, who once stubbed a cigar out on the face of a City youth team player at a Christmas do, has apologised to Klopp for his controversial 2017 comments – and even compared the German to late, great Anfield boss Bill Shankly.

He said: “I don’t think Liverpool back in the day were anywhere near as strong as they are now with the fans and the belief.
