The draft classes of former Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan were expected to take a hit this weekend as the team makes its roster cuts, but the 2019 class was expected to be safe.

Joe Douglas, Maccagnan’s replacement, felt differently.

Douglas cut linebacker Jachai Polite on Saturday, according to a source. Polite was taken by the team in the third round of April’s draft. He did not perform well in training camp or the preseason, but it is still stunning to see a draft pick cut before he even made it to the regular season.

Polite was projected as a first-round pick by some before the NFL Scouting Combine, but his stock plummeted after a poor workout and some bad interviews. There was also questions about his maturity. The Jets felt they were getting a steal in the third round. It is pretty clear that coach Adam Gase was not on board with this pick by Maccagnan, who was fired a few weeks after the draft.

Polite was viewed as a possible solution to the team’s pass-rushing problems. He had 11 sacks last year for the Florida Gators. It became clear in training camp that the coaches were not high on him. He played mostly with the third team and made very little impact. It can be argued he was not given enough chances, but the Jets wasted no time moving on.
