THE Charles Schwab Challenge follows the PGA Championship this week.

And after the dramatic victory for Phil Mickelson at Kiawah Island he is set to play again this week.

Mickelson became the oldest major championship winner in history.

But we've got three picks for this week's event in Texas at Colonial.

Tips for Charles Schwab Classic

Hot shot: Abraham Ancer, 20-1

Jordan Spieth will be many people’s idea of the winner on a course close to home, especially after a win and two seconds in this event.

But at twice the odds, the fast-improving Ancer looks better value, especially after his blistering USPGA Championship finish.

His final round 65 there was the best score of the tournament, and one of just a handful of bogey-free efforts all week.

That came on the back of a runner-up finish in the Wells Fargo Championship and a fifth place at the Valspar, so he is definitely a man in form.

Mid-price: Justin Rose, 30-1.

Another player who finished like a train at Kiawah Island – the former US Open champion was five under par through seven holes, before making a few mistakes by pressing too hard.

He still shot a closing 67 to join Ancer in a share of eighth, and that followed another eye-catching performance to finish one spot higher at the Masters.

A missed cut in between the Majors can be forgiven as he was clearly concentrating on the big ones, and he will see this as a great opportunity to get a win before bidding for a second US Open title next month.

Rose won here in 2018 and was tied third last year, so he ticks all the right boxes.

Long shot: Andrew Putnam 200-1

Five missed cuts in his last six starts explain the huge price, but before that he was an impressive fourth in the Arnold Palmer Invitational and fifth in Puerto Rico.

At these odds it is worth taking a chance on him bouncing back to form, especially on a course he has played well on before.

He was third here in 2019, and that is probably more reliable form than last year’s  – the event was the first one back after the 12 week coronavirus shutdown, and was played at a different time of year.

Putnam also shone in hot company when he was seventh in the Phoenix Open at the start of the year,  shooting rounds of 67-69-67-65. A repeat of that would do nicely!
