The Giants are planning to hire Patriots special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach Joe Judge as their new head coach in a stunning turn of events on Tuesday morning, ESPN.com reported.

According to the report, the Giants and Judge had a deal in the works on Monday night and that is part of the reason why Matt Rhule jumped at the Panthers job.

Judge, 38, was perhaps the least ballyhooed of the Giants’ coaching candidates with Rhule and Mike McCarthy, who is now the Cowboys coach, considered the early front-runners. Another Patriots coordinator, Josh McDaniels, was also scheduled to interview with the team.

Judge has been with the Patriots since 2012.
