GIANFRANCO ZOLA has been left in limbo by the uncertainty over who will sit in the Chelsea dugout next season.

The Blues are in talks with Juventus over a £7million compensation package for Maurizio Sarri with Frank Lampard set to replace him.

And Zola, who signed a one-year deal to be the Italian's No2, does not know if his future is secure.

The Times insists the Blues legend has grown fearful over his position with no contract offer on the table.

Chelsea are adamant they will not let Sarri leave for nothing despite a lack of backing for the Europa League-winning boss last season.

While they would like to confirm who will be leading the side next season, the two-window Fifa ban makes the negotiations less urgent.

And their position has held up discussions over his backroom team.

Zola, 52, could be asked to follow Sarri to Italy but has stronger ties to the club than his manager.

Lampard, meanwhile, has former team-mate Jody Morris as his right-hand man and is all-but certain to bring him in if he take the job.

Chelsea have lost talisman Eden Hazard to Real Madrid and cannot spent the £130million transfer fee.

But Christian Pulisic has completed his move from Dortmund and Callum Hudson-Odoi could finally be given a run in the first team.
