IT'S Derby day at Epsom and there is plenty of punting opportunities to get stuck into.

Our man Jack Keene continued his hot streak with 8-1 and 11-2 winners at Epsom on Friday, and he is back for more.

There seems an air of inevitability about this year's Derby, what with Ballydoyle putting all of their eggs in the Bolshoi Ballet basket.

He has looked a bit special in two starts this year and his profile is strikingly similar to his dad Galileo, who won the Derby 20 years ago.

But the heavy rain that fell on Oaks day won't have been ideal, given his daisy-cutter action, and there is no guarantee he will handle the roller-coaster of a track that is Epsom.

So I'll have a few quid each-way on HURRICANE LANE (4.30 Epsom), who is unbeaten in three starts.

He stayed on powerfully to win the Dante Stakes at York last month, with some smart sort including High Definition back in third, and he is bred to relish the step up to 1m4f.

By Frankel and with buckets of stamina on his mum's side, he will see out every inch of the trip (more than can be said for several of these), but he has also shown in his three career starts that he has a smart change of gear.

He is well-drawn in stall eight and his Derby-winning connections have been making all the right noises since his victory at York.

Earlier at Epsom, CENTURY DREAM (3.10 Epsom) will take some stopping in his bid to land a Diomed Stakes hat-trick.

Simon and Ed Crisford's seven-year-old has been a fantastic servant over the years, winning nine times and over £450k in prize money.

He has always been a notch below top-class, but he is a force to be reckoned with at this sort of level – and he is an even greater threat when there is ease in the ground.

The going at Epsom slowed-up following Friday's rain, increasing his chance significantly, and he will be cherry-ripe now after his much-needed reappearance in the Lockinge at Newbury.

He has proven himself around this course and, in truth, if he is anywhere near his best he should pick up these rivals and carry them.

Saturday selections (advised odds correct at time of writing)

SATURDAY

3.10 Epsom – Century Dream 2pts WIN @ 10-3

3.45 Epsom – Mondammej 1pt EW @ 14-1

4.30 Epsom – Hurricane Lane 1pt EW @ 9-1

  • (Column started August 6) rolling P&L: +73.4pts

And MONDAMMEJ (3.45 Epsom) is worth a few quid in the Dash.

He has been in rare form this season, winning impressively at Pontefract in April and running a huge race at York at the Dante meeting.

He travelled like a dream but was hampered at a crucial stage, eventually finishing third just three quarters of a length behind Copper Knight (he is now 4lb better off at the weights).

You can excuse his last run where he was never able to land a blow on bottomless ground, and this pure test of speed will suit.

Historically, you want to be drawn high in this race, so stall 18 is a plus, while there is plenty of pace around him to give him a tow into the race.
