New York City: Grigor Dimitrov stepped out of Roger Federer's shadow to claim a spot in the US Open semi-finals with a shock 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over the wounded Swiss.

Ranked 78th at the start of the US Open, Dimitrov claimed his first win in eight meetings against the 20-times grand slam winner.

Instead, Dimitrov advanced to his third major semi-final and his first in New York. He will face No.5 Daniil Medvedev.

Earlier, Medvedev tamed Stan Wawrinka to reach his first grand slam semi-final.

The fifth-seeded Russian saved a set point in the opening tiebreaker and twice needed extensive treatment on his legs as he ended the run of the Swiss veteran 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 3-6 6-1 in two hours and 34 minutes.

Wawrinka, the 2016 champion, might have felt he might have another retirement on his hands, having seen previous opponent Novak Djokovic throw in the towel two nights earlier, but that was not the case.

Medvedev improved his tour-leading total to 49 victories this year to become the youngest semi-finalist in New York since Novak Djokovic in 2010.

"It was a really strange match. I had real pain in my quadriceps and thought I couldn't finish. I feel really strange but I am happy to be in my first major semi," Medvedev said.
