DAVID DE GEA called Manchester United’s defeat at Newcastle “unacceptable” – and admitted they must improve "everything”.
United sunk to 12th in the league, two points from the bottom three after a 1-0 loss at St James’ Park.
Having failed to win away in 11 games, De Gea urged his team-mates to “step up” as they host Liverpool in two weeks time in what could decide manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s fate.
He told Sky Sports: "We didn't create any proper chances. We defended well.
The team needs to step up. We have some big injuries but that’s no excuse.
“We are Manchester United, we need to keep training hard, fighting and winning games."
Asked what needs improving, the keeper said: "Everything. A lot of things to improve.
“I don’t know what to say. Keep trying, fighting, improving every day. It’s a hard moment for us.
4"The most difficult time since I’ve been here. I don’t know why, what is happening. Sorry to the fans. We will keep fighting.
"Come on, we conceded a goal from a corner. That cannot happen. It’s unacceptable."
Solskjaer’s Reds looked deprived of ideas and lacked any urgency at Newcastle, as debutant Matty Longstaff refilled in a famous winner.
United suffer their third league defeat of the season, with only TWO wins in eight matches.
Old Trafford boss Solskjaer admitted to battling an uphill challenge, and does not know when things will turn around.
He said: "It will take however long it will have to take. It's a journey we've started on and the culture is getting there.
“I can't give you any time but we're getting there. We've given ourselves a big, big uphill challenge to get among the top four but it's tight and we need to get a run together.
"We've come together and discussed the direction we're going.
“If you only work on sunny days you'll never get to your destination. We'll have these days but we know where we want to get to."
