Liverpool fan Jonny Clayton is dreaming of parading another Premier League trophy in front of the Kop.

And the 'Ferret' still hopes his favourite team can match his feats of 2021 – by landing a quadruple of major titles as they hope to add the FA Cup, European Cup and Premier League title to their victory in the Carabao Cup.

The Pontyberem plasterer has already qualified for the Cazoo Premier League darts play-offs in Berlin next month after his brilliant win against Michael van Gerwen in Glasgow last week. Now Clayton, the defending champion, wants Liverpool to regain their perch at English football's summit and complete their own quadruple.

Clayton said: “I’m a massive supporter of Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp has done the job for us big-time and now he’s signed up (to a new contract) we’ve got many more years to come. If I can defend my Premier League title I’d be happy to take a lap of honour at Anfield with the trophy – hopefully alongside their Premier League trophy, that would be very cool.

“But to be totally honest, I’d happily take four tickets to Paris for the Champions League final as well! I did the major quadruple in 2021, so it would be awesome if Liverpool can emulate that and do an amazing football quadruple and follow me. It’s tough at the top. Manchester City and Liverpool have proved they are the best two teams in the world I think. It’s going to be nip and tuck all the way. I like the Klopp focus, I could adapt that: Whatever sport you play, you have got to win.

“But when rhythm and confidence comes into it, that’s when great teams or players come alive. I think Liverpool are one of the greatest teams ever. Momentum is also massive. And I think I’ve got that, it’s building up so hopefully, I can go all the way in this Premier League.”

Three-times world champion Van Gerwen is back on song after winning the European Open in Leverkusen at the weekend, but Clayton believes he has the consistency to cope with Clog Almighty. He said: “I’m still playing for £10,000 a night so I’m going to try my best every night, but it’s nice to see that 'Q' next to my name on the league table. I’m trying not to think about whether I’ve got extra pressure as a defending champion. Probably there is. But I just wanted to get into the play-offs and I’ve done that. So part one done. Part two is to try and win it again.

“Have I got Michael’s number at the moment? I’ll take that. But I’ve been battered so many times against him, it’s nice to beat him. I think the players in the top four now will be hard to change. But darts is a funny game.” Clayton meets Michael Smith at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield on Thursday night, while Van Gerwen – the bookies' favourite to win a sixth Premier League crown – takes on reigning world champion Peter Wright.
