Canelo cherrypicked Kovalev over a trilogy with Gennady Golovkin (or even super middleweight king Callum Smith), so while it is admirable that he is stepping up to light heavyweight (in pursuit of a world title in a fourth weight division), there is clearly a calculated strategy involved here.

DAZN have been very accommodating with the Mexican, despite signing him and the Kazakh with that lucrative third fight in mind. Kovalev presents a big risk if he can salvage most of the fighter we saw dish out havoc from 2016 and before, with that bludgeoning jab that even Andre Ward struggled to navigate. But there is clearly some vulnerability to him right now, as Anthony Yarde proved in his admirable challenge earlier this year. Kovalev has been suspect to the body in the past, something which should see Canelo licking his lips as one of the sport’s premier body punchers.

Expect Canelo to absorb some bombs as he closes the gap into the mid rounds before slowing the Russian and eventually stopping him late.

When and where is the fight?

The fight is on November 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

What time will the fight start?

The fight is going up against UFC 244 and DAZN (the broadcaster in the United States for Canelo vs Kovalev) want to avoid clashing with Nate Diaz vs Jorge Masvidal.

With UFC 244 preliminaries starting at 7pm ET (midnight GMT), the Diaz vs Masvidal fight is set to begin at around 10pm ET (3am GMT).

That means Canelo vs Kovalev will commence shortly after the fight’s culmination, which, if it goes the distance, will be approaching 4am GMT.

So expect the ring walks to commence around then and the first bell to be nearer 4:30am GMT.

Odds
