VE Day celebrations will have to take a new form this year, as COVID-19 forces the 75th anniversary indoors. The disease has led the government to cancel several aspects of their VE Day plans, but the public is determined to celebrate none the less.

How to make your own Union Jack bunting and decorations

VE Day celebrates the end of World War Two in Europe when the Allies triumphed over Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich.

The day itself falls on May 8 this year, which the Government has marked with the Early May Bank Holiday, and previously planned several outdoors events such as the traditional veteran’s parade.

However, lockdown conditions forced their hand, and people must now take their celebrations indoors.

The BBC’s Make a Difference campaign has asked people to show off the bunting they create for VE Day and provided a template and instructions for people to get started.

Budding crafters can find the template on the BBC’s website, and they have supplied the following guide on how to use it:

Decorate the bunting

  • Decorate the main triangle but leave the top strip blank
  • Use any method, including paint, pencils, pens, glitter and stickers
  • Draw anything inspirational, such as a World War Two soldier, a family member or a personal hero

Construct the bunting

  • Fold along the solid black line of the template to create a flap
  • Hang the flap over a string or ribbon and glue it in place
  • Leave enough space between each triangle and some length of ribbon or string at either end to hang up the completed bunting
  • Hang the bunting in the window

  • Fold the paper in half long ways
  • Draw a line diagonally from the outside of the paper at the top to the fold in the middle at the bottom
  • Cut along that line through both sides of the paper
  • Unfold your paper

As people create their own decorations at home, broadcasters have curated a selection of programmes to celebrate VE Day’s 75th anniversary.

Amongst them is an address from Queen Elizabeth II, which will take place at 9pm on May 8 in the UK.

Her speech will mirror her father’s in 1945, which marked the end of the war.

Immediately after, a national singalong of Vera Lynn’s We Will Meet Again will take place, and the BBC will also air Winston Churchill’s famed speech
