Over the course of eight seasons, Game of Thrones gained a reputation for killing off main characters without hesitation. That did not change in the final season, though there was one character who was originally supposed to survive the Battle of Winterfell and Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) wrath as the Mad Queen.

Who was supposed to survive Season 8 of ‘Game of Thrones’?

In a new interview, longtime Game of Thrones writer DaveHill revealed that they always wanted Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen) to survive thefinal season. The only thing that stopped them was the problem of writing aconvincing narrative that would land Jorah north of The Wall. Jorah was alwaysloyal to Daenerys.

Getting him to leave her side prior to Jon Snow (Kit Harington) driving a dagger through her heart would have been difficult, so they opted to have him die defending her instead.

“For a long time, we wanted Ser Jorah to be there at TheWall in the end. The three coming out of the tunnel would be Jon (KitHarington) and Jorah (Iain Glen) and Tormund (Kristofer Hivju),” Hill shared.

Jorah perished in the first half of Season 8. Right before AryaStark (Maisie Williams) killed the Night King, Jorah found himself outside ofthe castle walls protecting Daenerys against an onslaught of undead soldiers.

Given what Daenerys did after the Battle of Winterfell, it wasprobably for the best that Jorah did not see her descend into madness. In fact,even Glen is happy that Jorah died when he did and never learned the truthabout Daenerys.

Glen opens up about Ser Jorah’s death

According to FoxNews, Glen recently opened up about Jorah’s demise and admitted thathe liked how his character died. Glen was happy that Jorah did not live to seeDaenerys murder innocent women and children in King’s Landing.

He also got to skip out on watching Jon kill Daenerys. From his point of view, he helped the rightful heir to the Iron Throne survive the Battle of Winterfell, which gave him a sense of purpose in the end.

“Where could we have taken Jorah from there? F— if Iknow,” Glen added.

Glen added that he believes Jorah’s end was right and that it wasboth heroic and fulfilling. He also opened up about the moment David Benioffand Dan Weiss told him Jorah was going to die. The producers thought he wouldbe upset and were surprised when he said that he loved the script.

Although Glen was satisfied by Jorah’s ending, other Game of Thrones stars were hoping for different endings to their characters. This includes Williams, who revealed that she thought Arya should have died hunting down Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) instead of turning back at The Hound’s (Rory McCann) behest.

Despite the backlash Game of Thrones received from many fans, there is no denying that the cast and crew put a lot of effort into the final season. HBO put their hard work on display in its new documentary, Game of Thrones: The Last Watch, which offered a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the final season.

This includes an in-depth exploration of the different departments that made it all happen, such as makeup, costumes, hair, location managers, and special effects.

The two-hour documentary praised producer Bernie Caulfield, whomBenioff and Weiss say was the man who really made it all happen. Thedocumentary was helmed by British filmmaker Jeanie Finlay, who stayed with thecast and crew as they filmed the final season in Northern Ireland, Croatia, andother locations. Harington and Clarke cried when they read the final script for ‘Gameof Thrones’

The documentary showed the exact moment when Harington and Clarkediscovered that Jon was going to kill Daenerys in the finale.

The actors found out about Daenerys’ demise during the table readfor the finale, titled “The Iron Throne.” After Harington read thetragic scene, he couldn’t help but shed some tears, as did Clarke.

The documentary also revealed that the final season of Game ofThrones cost around $15 million per hour. Although the series ended on acontroversial note, the documentary showed that producing the final season wasno easy task. Given how the finale broke HBO’s previous ratings record, all ofthe effort was well worth it.
