Cheers to the new year! British experts predict the drinks we’ll ALL be enjoying in 2020 from craft coffee tipples to pink Prosecco

  • Leading British alcohol supplier has predicted the drinks trends for 2020
  • Pink Prosecco and sake are set to be the next big things in the new year
  • Spanish wines and bottles from Austria will also grow in popularity next year

Next year we’ll all be sipping on Spanish wines, popping open pink Prosecco and dining with a glass of sake, a new beverage report reveals.

Bibendum Wine, which supplies alcohol to bars and restaurants across the UK, also claims drinkers will also move toward crafty coffee cocktails and low calorie drinks in 2020.

The retailer monitors the spending habits at restaurants and bars across the country to pick out trends at the early stages and predict what might be the next big thing. Here Femail reveals the drinks we’ll be drinking in 2020…

CRAFT COFFEE INFUSIONS

While Espresso Martinis have been in vogue for years, coffee will be influencing beer, spirits and ready to drink cocktails next year.

Cold brew, Guarana seeds and unroasted ‘green’ coffee beans have been seen as ingredients in 67 per cent  of trendsetting bars, and in 2020, Bibendum expects alcoholic ‘hard’ coffee ready to drinks to catch on.

SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING

CHEERS TO ASIA!

Japan, China, Korea and South East Asia are influencing the UK drinks scene.

Three in 10 trendsetting wine venues in the UK list Sake on their menus while 10 per cent of all cocktails include liqueurs or ingredients from the Far East.

These exotic ingredients include the citrus fruit Yuzu, the Pandan plant and Miso seasoning.

Unsurprisingly as the country makes moves toward being more green, in 2020, packaging will be top of the drinks agenda!

Almost all consumers (87 per cent) are concerned about packaging – so from wine in cans and cocktails on tap to innovative beer packaging, expect to see brands stepping up to reduce their environmental impact in 2020.

WINES FROM AUSTRIA

Austrian wine features on 9 in 10 of the most trendsetting wine lists.

Austria may be best known for its Grüner Veltliner, but other indigenous grapes, will be hitting the main stream. Expect to see some Austrian sparkling too.

THINK PINK

Pink Prosecco could well be hitting the market in 2020, with sales of the fizz continuing to see double-digit growth, along with 1 in 4 consumers regularly ‘drinking pink’

HARD SELTZERS

Typically low calorie, low sugar and low alcohol (4 – 6 per cent), Hard Seltzers have been a roaring success in the US, where sales have surged 210 per cent in a year.

REGIONAL SPANISH TIPPLES

While Rioja is the UK consumer’s favourite winemaking region globally, next year will bring increased consumption of alternative Spanish regions.

In the top-end of restaurants tracked, just 20 per cent of Spanish listings are from Rioja, while regions such as Catalonia, Galicia and the Canary Islands have a strong presence.

This grain-based drink is set to soar with younger drinkers, who are looking for ‘healthier’ options on a night out.

SOUTH AMERICAN INFLUENCE

In 2020, more consumers will drink wine from alternative South American countries (think Uruguay and Bolivia) and regions (think Patagonia) as well as lesser-known grapes like Bonarda, Touriga and Tannat.

NEO NATURAL

Natural winemaking is proving to be far more than a passing trend. Next year, we will see the natural trend trickle into the craft beer market and in wine, naturally fermented Pet-Nat sparkling will be a firm favourite.

LOW AND NO CALORIES

The trend for low and no is nothing new, but 2020 will see the diversification of this segment as it hits new categories, including dark spirits, aperitifs and ready to drinks.
