The Sister viewers ‘switch off’ as they bemoan Russell Tovey’s ‘constant mumbling’ and the slow-paced plot of the supernatural thriller, branding it the ‘worst ITV drama in ages’
- The Sister viewers ‘switched off’ after last night’s episode of supernatural thriller
- Twitter users bemoaned Russell Tovey’s ‘mumbling’ as main character Nathan
- Others criticised slow-paced plot and called show the ‘worst ITV drama in ages’
The second episode of ITV’s new supernatural thriller The Sister failed to win over viewers last night – with critics bemoaning Russell Tovey’s ‘constant mumbling’ and the slow-paced plot.
Adapted from Luther creator Neil Cross’ novel Burial, the four-part drama follows Nathan (played by Russell), who’s spent years trying to atone for a terrible mistake in his past, involving the death of his wife’s sister, Elise (Simone Ashley).
In last night’s episode, viewers saw a flashback of Nathan and his acquaintance, paranormal expert Bob, running into one another at a New Year’s Eve party, where they also met Elise.
The three of them were seen taking drugs together before the programme moved forward to Nathan and Bob burying Elise’s body in a woodland area, offering little detail as to how the murder came about.
Police detective and family friend of Elise’s Jacki (Nina Toussaint-White) was also introduced – with the officer becoming suspicious of Nathan, who is now married to the victim’s sister Holly (Amrita Acharia).
But the thickening plot appeared to not move fast enough for viewers, with one saying: ‘This plot is going so slowly they might as well do the whole show in flashback’, while another criticised Russell’s acting, writing: ‘Couldn’t understand half the things [he] said due to all the mumbling.’

Criticising the slow-paced plot, one person wrote ‘I had high hopes for this show when it was advertised weeks ago, but the reality is just a disappointment. Two hours of my life I wont get back.’
Other viewers suggested they were switching off due to the ‘constant mumbling’ from the main character.
‘Not sure I can stick with #TheSister on #ITV can’t hear what @russelltovey is mumbling for starters and all this jumping back and forwards in time just too confusing’, one Twitter user wrote.
A second added: ‘I’m not on board with all of the mumbling that’s going on in #thesister #articulateclearlyplease.’
A third unimpressed viewer wrote: ‘Why is he mumbling all the time? I’ve had to put the subtitles on #TheSister.’
Reaction: Disappointed viewers were keen to take to Twitter and criticise the slow-paced plot

In last night’s episode, viewers saw a flashback where Nathan, Bob and Elise meet for the first time at a New Year’s Eve party.
A smitten-looking Nathan and Elise encountered one another while walking home through a woodland area, where they captured the attention of Bob as he drove alongside them.
Bob soon encouraged the duo to join him on his way to another party, before offering them some drugs.
However, the night took a horrific turn and viewers witnessed Nathan and Bob burying Elise in the woods – with no more details being offered as to how the situation escalated.

Meanwhile, in the present day, police detective and family friend of Elise’s Jacki was introduced to audiences at home.
She was the officer who interviewed Nathan following Elise’s disappearance after discovering they’d been at the same party before she vanished.
However, she was quick to reassure Nathan at the time, as well as Bob, that they aren’t suspects since they were seen on CCTV driving home together after Elise’s last ‘sighting’.
The victim’s ex boyfriend claimed to hear her crying outside his house after the pair had already been seen leaving the area.
But Jacki was left shocked after discovering Nathan started a relationship with Elise’s sister Holly before soon marrying her – despite not telling her that he was there at the party the night her sister vanished.
She soon grows suspicious of Nathan and digs into her old police interview regarding Elise’s disappearance.
