Tatler has unveiled Princess Charlene as its latest cover star as the royal’s mysterious illness continues to make headlines around the world.
The cover of the British society bible’s January edition is dominated by a photo of the princess from 2019 and declares her life has ‘more drama than a soap opera’.
The Tatler feature, published next Thursday, will trace how Charlene went from South African Olympian to the Princess of Monaco.
Media frenzy: Tatler has unveiled Princess Charlene as its latest cover star as the royal’s mysterious illness continues to make headlines around the world
Mysterious illness: News outlets and magazines around the world are gripped by the story of Charlene, who was admitted to a treatment facility within days of her return to Monaco following a 10-month absence in South Africa. Pictured, her family reunion in Monaco
Concern: Page Six published a report from anonymous sources who claimed Charlene had ‘almost died’ following surgery from a sinus infection, which was what caused her to be grounded in South Africa. Pictured, Charlene looking visibly frail in a photo from October
‘While the world continues to speculate over her health and marriage, Tatler looks back at how Charlene came to be the princess of the most glamorous realm in Europe – one known for its great wealth, its stylish women and its Hollywood connection via Grace Kelly, the late mother-in-law she never met,’ a preview article teases.
‘How did Charlene, a former Olympic swimmer from a different continent, come to meet her Prince Charming? And what do her friends and her family say about the current situation?’
News outlets and magazines around the world are gripped by the story of Charlene, 43, who was admitted to a treatment facility within days of her return to Monaco following a 10-month absence in her native South Africa.
Her husband Prince Albert, 63, spoke out to say she is suffering from ‘exhaustion, both emotional and physical’ but has not been more specific as to her condition. It is thought she will remain in treatment for ‘several weeks’.
This week Page Six published a report from anonymous sources who claimed Charlene had ‘almost died’ following surgery from a sinus infection, which was what caused her to be grounded in South Africa.
Speaking to the publication, a source described as the royal’s friend said: ‘It is unfair that she is being portrayed as having some kind of mental or emotional issue.
Family life: Meanwhile Prince Albert has continued to make public appearances with their six-year-old twins, Jacques and Gabriella. The trio attended a tree planting event in Monaco on Wednesday and the Monaco National Day celebrations last Friday, pictured
Sibling support: This week Prince Jacques placed a protective arm around his twin sister as the youngsters a South African tree on the terraces of the Casino to mark the centenary of the Soroptimist International Organisation and in honor of Princess Charlene of Monaco
‘We don’t know why the palace is downplaying that she almost died in South Africa.’
The source explained the royal had a severe ear, nose and throat infection, which resulted in ‘severe sinus and swallowing issues stemming from an earlier surgery’.
The friend added: ‘She has not been able to eat solid food in over six months because of all the surgeries she has since gone through. She has only been able to take in liquids through a straw, so she lost nearly half her body weight.’
Meanwhile Prince Albert has continued to make public appearances with their six-year-old twins, Jacques and Gabriella. The trio attended a tree planting event in Monaco on Wednesday and the Monaco National Day celebrations last Friday.
In media interviews, Albert explained he had stepped up to play a bigger role in his children’s lives as the family copes with Charlene’s ongoing health issues.
Jacques and Gabriella are homeschooled at the palace after being taken out of the classroom due to Covid.
‘For me, it’s pretty simple – my priority is my family,’ he said in an interview this month. ‘Of course, without neglecting state affairs… I hope everyone understands that. When I can be with my kids, I do it without hesitation.
‘This is an extremely important time in their life – the way they grow up helps them see the world.
‘And if one of the parents is away for medical reasons, the other parent has to be there. I have heard too many friends and acquaintances telling me that they wish they had been there for their children, at a certain age, taken up by their work or their professional life. I don’t want to have these regrets.’
The January issue of Tatler is available on newsstands and via digital download on Thursday 2nd December.
