Mum and Dad have a two-bedroom house after downsizing some years ago. 

We are all a bit cramped and I bet they can’t wait for us to leave. 

We’ve been accepted for a mortgage but my partner has said: “Let’s stay here a few more years and save more.”

I’m tempted to ask him to go.

DEIDRE SAYS: He is your son’s dad and boys benefit from a male role-model – but an effective one. Ask him what exactly is making him shy away from setting up your own home. It can feel like a big leap but that is when adulthood arrives.

Support each other through this transition. Write down plans for how you will cope. Give him a hug, too – living with parents can stop you feeling close.
