DID you indulge in a bit of Easter excess and end up with too many chocolate eggs yesterday?
Here are some creative ways to use up your leftovers. Why not get the family involved and have a go at this lot . . .
A grate finish. Style up your puddings to make them extra glam. Pop an Easter egg in the freezer for half an hour, then use a potato peeler to grate it into chocolate curls.
They make a great topping for ice cream and I love adding them to cereal, especially granola.
Break an egg into different-sized shards and layer up on top of cheesecakes and chocolate cakes.
Delicious dippers. Chocolate-dipped strawberries are a luxury. But if you can’t get out to buy strawberries, try other fruits.
Banana or apple slices and my favourite, orange segments, all work. Melt down your eggs in the microwave or in a pan over a low heat.
Once melted, drizzle the chocolate over the fruit pieces or dip them individually until completely coated. Put them in the fridge to set. You could also sprinkle them with chopped nuts.
Gifts galore. Chocolate bark — similar to chocolate but made with vegetable fats instead of cocoa butter — is the latest Pinterest cooking trend but it can be pricey — I found a bar for £5.95 at notonthehighstreet.com. But you can make your own version by lining a tray with greaseproof paper or clingfilm and scattering ingredients over it, such as dried fruit or nuts, Crunchie pieces or Smarties. Then pour melted Easter egg over it and put it in the fridge to set.
Once set, break into shards, put into bags, tie with ribbon and treat your loved ones to a tasty homemade chocolate bark bag.
Cause a stir. I like to keep the disposable wooden chopsticks that come with a Chinese takeaway and use them. Melt the chocolate in a pan or microwave then pour into an ice cube tray.
Put a stick in each of the cubes and put in the fridge to set.
Once set, you have your very own hot chocolate stirrers. If you have any cellophane, wrap them up — they make a lovely gift.
Bake off. There are so many different cakes you can bake with your leftover eggs, such as brownies, sponges or simple chocolate cornflake cakes. But if you can’t get to M&S to get its giant chocolate buttons, make your own and save yourself £2 by melting chocolate and using a spoon to create blobs then chilling.
If you have any orange or peppermint essence in your cupboard, you can even make the most-wanted mint or orange versions.
