An aspiring model had all four of her limbs amputated after contracting a deadly disease from a “mist machine” at a gig.

Evelyn Davis, 22 from Tyler, Texas, began to feel ill just days after attending a concert in June, 2022.

And shortly after Evelyn “miraculously” opened her eyes after a 16-day coma, she was dismayed to find out she needed all four of her limbs amputated.

Doctors were shocked to discover that she had contracted Legionnaires’ disease, which was believed to be caused by a bacteria-harbouring “mist machine” at the gig.

The disease is a severe form on pneumonia, which can be "caught by breathing in tiny droplets of water", according to the NHS.

After initially feeling unwell, things went from bad to worse as her body temp hit 40°C.

Evelyn was rushed to hospital and diagnosed with sepsis and pneumonia.

The Texan went into full organ failure and entered a coma, and at day 10 doctors discovered that the deadly disease was the route course to her ailments.

Evelyn was also given drugs to stabilise her blood pressure, which cut off blood flow to her hands and feet, but taken off them after 12 days.

She explained: “The doctors told my parents and husband that I wasn't going to recover and if I did ever wake up, I'd have substantial organ damage but I did and all my organs were ok.

“My mom told me that I told her that I was about to die. I was in a coma for 16 days.”

But defying odds, she awoke from her slumber on day 16 on 2 July but she noticed her limbs didn’t feel right.

Evelyn said: “Once I woke up, I felt that something was wrong with my limbs because they were completely black and cold but my brain was still very groggy, I really couldn't process much.”

Later that month, she had both her legs amputated below the knees, as well as right arm above her wrist and two inches before her elbow on her left.

The newly-wed said: “As soon as I got to the other hospital and my brain was more aware and I saw what my limbs looked like, I knew that they were going to have to be amputated before anyone told me.”

Despite the loss of her arms and legs, Evelyn was unshakable and knew she needed to crack on with life as best she could.

She added: “When I woke up without them I thought 'ok, well, it is what it is'.

“It's just a part of me now.”

The 22-year-old was told that she should be “admitted to a nursing home” as she had “no potential”, and there were very slim chances that she’d walked again.

But through sheer grit and determination through months of rehab, she bravely stood up and took her first on 22 September.

Her new bionic limbs include pin and lock leg prosthetics and two BeBionic hands, which have 14 different hand patterns.

Evelyn’s hoping to start driving school, become a disabled model and obtain a social work degree so she can become a patient advocate in the future.

She concluded: “I thought I'd lose people and friends but they all just constantly surround me. Everyone has been committed to make sure I'm not alone in this.”
