The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will visit Canada House in Trafalgar Square tomorrow.

Harry and Meghan will meet with Janice Charette, High Commissioner for Canada to the UK, and her staff, to thank them for the warm Canadian hospitality and support they received during their recent stay in the country.

The couple snubbed the royal family’s traditional Christmas at Sandringham and spent their first Christmas with baby Archie in a $14.1 million (£10.71 million) waterfront mansion in one of the most idyllic spots on Vancouver Island.

Tomorrow’s appearance marks their first public event since their festive break, and confirms they have now returned to the UK.

Following their meeting with the High Commissioner, their Royal Highnesses will visit the Canada Gallery and view a special exhibition by Indigenous Canadian artist, Skawennati.

The Sussexes will also meet different members of the High Commission team who work in a range of sectors supporting the partnership between Canada and the UK.

Harry and Meghan last visited Canada House on Commonwealth Day in March 2019 where they met and spoke with young Canadians from a wide range of sectors including fashion, the arts, and business and academia, about their experiences as expats, as well as opportunities for young people working in the Commonwealth.

They were escorted around the grand Greek Revival building on Trafalgar Square by the Ms Charette, who said she kept dropping hints about them visiting Canada soon but got no firm commitment.

‘I think their priority is the baby first,’ she said at the time.

The high commissioner told the royal couple: ‘We trust that your visit to Canada House today has served as a reminder of happy times spent in Canada. We do kind of claim you.’

Up to 500,000 Canadians currently live in the UK, a figure that reflects the strong, historic and enduring bond between the two countries.

It comes amid reports the couple are set to take on more work in Canada this year after the country provided them with the chance to ‘genuinely switch off’ on their extended break, a royal expert has claimed.

Speaking to OK magazine, Omid Scobie, BAZAAR.com’s royal editor at large, also said the couple’s packed work schedule in 2020 means another baby is not a ‘priority’ right now, but would be a ‘wonderful surprise’.

He added that their recent six-week break from royal duties, which culminated in the glamorous trip to Vancouver Island, gave the Duke and Duchess of Sussex a chance to ‘recharge’ and spend some ‘uninterrupted’ quality time as a family-of-three.

‘[Canada] is a safe place for the couple – they were able to go unnoticed there for a while,’ Omid told the publication.

‘It’s an important place for Meghan and she has family and friends there. It’s also part of the Commonwealth. We’ll see them take on more work there, perhaps even a tour, but I don’t think they’re house-hunting yet.’

He went on to say they’ll return to work with ‘renewed energy’ and will be ‘safeguarding their mental health’ more in 2020, having endured a challenging 12 months.

In September Meghan admitted to feeling vulnerable on ITV documentary Harry and Meghan: An African Journey, while the duke revealed he still struggles with the anguish caused by his mother’s death, adding that he and his brother, Prince William, are on ‘different paths’.

Another royal commentator recently claimed Meghan told how pals she would like to welcome their second baby in her hometown of LA, because being pregnant in the UK away from her friends and family made her feel ‘incredibly lonely and uncomfortable’.

However, Omid – who runs the HeirPod podcast – put paid to any rumours of a reconciliation between the duchess and her father Thomas Markle, claiming she ‘closed the door on that chapter’.

That means it’s unlikely he’ll get to meet his grandson Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, who turns one in May.

While we may expect Harry and Meghan to throw a big party for their son’s first birthday, judging by the duchess’ elaborate New York baby shower, Omid claims their home life is very ‘low key’ and he expects the ‘indoorsy couple’ to enjoy a quiet affair at home.
