Eid al Fitr begins tonight – Sunday, May 24 – and is a celebration commemorating the end of the month of Ramadan. Throughout Ramadan, Muslims undertake fasting from dawn to sunset, and Eid ends the fasting with feasting, sharing foods, giving gifts and spending time with loved ones.

Eid may feel strange for many this year, as due to the coronavirus outbreak social gatherings are banned – meaning prayers and meetings of friends and family cannot take place.

Instead, many are using online services as a way to follow prayers, apps like Zoom and Houseparty to call friends and family and delivery services to send gifts.

The date of Eid al Fitr changes each year, depending on the sighting of the Shawwal moon.

The Shawwal moon sighting signifies the end of the month of Ramadan and beginning of the month of Shawwal.

Quotes

The taking of one innocent life is like taking all of mankind… and the saving of one life is like saving all of mankind. (Quran, 5:33)

I put my trust in Allah, my Lord and your Lord! There is not a moving creature, but He has a grasp of its forelock. Verily, my Lord is on the straight path [the truth]. (Quran 11:55-56)

Do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately and know that your deeds will not make you enter Paradise, and that the most beloved deed to Allah’s is the most regular and constant even though it were little. [Prophet Muhammad (s) as narrated by A’isha (ra) in Sahih Bukhari, vol. 8, hadith 471]

He is the One God; the Creator, the Initiator, the Designer. To Him belong the most beautiful names. Glorifying Him is everything in the heavens and the earth. He is the Almighty, most wise. (Quran 59:24)
