KEEPING the kids looking sharp isn't cheap, but Sainsbury's has slashed the price of school uniforms by 20% for a limited time only.

The discounts will be welcome relief for families struggling to fork out for essentials – but the deal ends soon.

Last year, new laws ruled that schools must make uniforms affordable for parents from August 2022.

Some schools still insist parents buy branded items, when a standard kit would be cheaper.

One school in Kent expected parents to cough up £80 for uniforms but was slammed by parents for being "tone deaf".

The Department for Education said parents can save £50 by buying uniform from a generic store, as opposed to a specialist shop.

And with stores such as Sainsbury's cutting prices by a further 20%, it's easy to see why.

Shoppers can grab bargain items both in store and online from Tu clothing while stocks last, or until May 21 when the offer ends.

On top of this, many Tu clothing school uniform products are sold in multipacks, meaning you get even more bang for you buck.

For example, there's a pack of three white scallop shape collar polo shirts for £2.80 down from £3.50, though only sizes three, four and seven years are left, compared to a three pack from M&S which starts from £7.

A two pack of gingham classic dresses is £8 down from £10 and available in multiple colours depending on your child's school colours.

A three pack of white, short-sleeve school shirts ages three to 16 is £3.20, down from £4.

And a four pack of grey classic shorts for ages three to 12 is £9.60, down from £12.

You can check out the full range of clothes on offer on Sainsbury's website, which has 450 lines to browse through.

Note that some items are online exclusives only, meaning you won't see them in stores, so always check before making a trip.

We found that Sainsbury's beat other supermarkets on school uniform prices where the items are similar.

For example, Tesco sells a two pack of pleated pinafores from £10, whereas Sainsbury's has a pack of four from £14.40, down from £18 – meaning Tu clothing is still the cheaper option even at full price.

Though Asda sells a pack of two pleated school pinafore dresses for £9, which works out at the same as Sainsbury's when the item is full price.

The Sainsbury's sale was shared to the Facebook group Money Saver by Dansway, and shoppers were pleased by the news.

One user said: "Ordered for September!" while others had the same idea to bulk buy pieces before the next school year.
