Thick fog has descended across much of the UK today, although it is expected to clear before this evening's New Year's Eve celebrations.

The Met Office predicts cool and clear conditions for firework displays across the country tonight.

Revellers will need to wrap up warm as they head out to ring in 2020 tonight, with Brits set to shiver in cold weather.

A north-south temperature divide means some areas of Scotland and eastern England could even see a touch of frost.

Maximum temperatures of 10C to 11C and cloudy skies are forecast in south-west England.

Weather warnings for thick fog, which were in force yesterday, were lifted this morning.

Met Office meteorologist Luke Miall said: "For people travelling to work on Tuesday, it's not looking too bad really."

He added that a cold front would be moving in following a weekend of balmy weekend – which saw temperatures reach 16.3C in the north of Scotland, a new UK record for so late in December.

"Monday was the last of the milder days, we've got a cold front sinking south west, and it's staying grey and murky throughout the day tomorrow," he said.

"For the start of the New Year's Eve celebrations, most of the country will be dry."

He added: "It's going to be getting cooler across much of Scotland and the eastern counties of England.

"It's looking like it's going to be pretty frosty across these parts, whereas in southern and western England it's looking cloudy."

Flooding is also expected in some parts of the country, particularly in south-west England.

The Environment Agency has issued 27 flood warnings and 50 less serious flood alerts.

It will become mostly cloudy this evening but there will be clear spells for a time in eastern Scotland and north-east England.

After midnight things are expected to turn grey and cloudy, with mist in places. In Northern Ireland and north-west Scotland there will be patchy rain.

Tomorrow should bring mostly dry, grey and cloudy weather in the morning but there will be a few bright spells in northern and eastern Scotland as well as coastal parts of north-east England.

There will be a few spots of rain in north-east Scotland. In the afternoon, the weather is expected to remain mostly cloudy with patchy mist.

Thursday promises to be mostly dry and cloudy in the east but there will be patchy rain in the west.

Friday is likely to be largely dry and sunny, especially in the south. There will be scattered showers in northern and western Scotland, some heavy.

Tonight:

Turning cloudier from the south and west, but mostly dry. Fog patches developing this evening over eastern and northeastern England and the north Midlands. Cold and frosty for northeast Scotland.

Wednesday:

Good deal of cloud for many areas but mostly dry. Some breaks about, mainly over north Wales, northeast England, northern and eastern Scotland and Northern Ireland. Turning windy over Scotland.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Band of rain and strong winds pushes southeast through Thursday, clearing eastern England early Friday. Showers follow, these heavy and wintry at times in the north Saturday. Colder than recently.
