A WOMAN has revealed her utter horror after reaching into the pocket of her new work trousers to find a bloody, used tampon – that wasn't hers.

And if you're about to tuck into your lunch while reading this, you might want to wait a few minutes, because this story will turn the strongest of stomachs.

Payton Wilson, a lab worker from Washington, US, was left in pure shock when she found the used sanitary product wrapped up in her new trousers.

The 20-year-old had bought a few new pairs of the black elasticated style from Walmart, but was confused when she discovered a lump in the pocket of one while at work.

Payton, who is used to handling blood every day in her job as a phlebotomist, explained she initially thought the lump was a note, but was left disgusted when she realised there was a bloody tampon wrapped inside the lined paper.

"I was sitting at my desk going through blood samples when I noticed I had a lump in my pocket but I didn't remember putting anything in there," she explained.

"I looked in my pocket and it was a crumpled up piece of paper so I initially thought it was a note, but as I unfolded it I saw blood and it was a used tampon.

"I was absolutely mortified. Who in their right mind would do that?

"I don't know if it was a prank or why someone would do that but it's not justifiable in any way, it was absolutely disgusting."

Luckily, Payton was already wearing rubber gloves, but the scientist explained just how unsanitary and dangerous it could have been.

"If someone else had bought them and wasn’t wearing gloves, who knows the kind of diseases they could have caught from it," she said.

"I had washed all the trousers before I'd worn any of them, but from now on I'll be checking the pockets of every item I buy before I even take it off the rail. I never want to go through that again."

After returning to the store, Payton said Walmart staff were extremely apologetic and as disgusted as she had been at the incident, and offered her a $50 USD gift card.
