THEY are the bane of every gardeners’ life – so how can you get rid of weeds effectively?
One green-fingered pro has had his say, as he demonstrated how he ensures his outside space stays weed free all year long.
And he said his technique has the added benefit of making your soil healthier too, meaning it’s a double win.
Gardener and author Simon Akeroyd revealed that he sees many people making the same errors – that, in turn, can lead to even more weeds popping up.
Demonstrating exactly what not to do, the TikTok member @simonakeroyd posted a new video to his profile.
He was seen clutching a spade as he asked: “Are you making this mistake in your garden?”

The footage then cut to Simon digging up some soil in one of his flower beds, moving the spade deeper and deeper.
But Simon revealed: “Digging the soil destroys its structure and you end up slicing through weed roots.”
While that might sound initially positive as you’re removing them from the ground, Simon revealed it has completely the opposite effect.
He continued: “Meaning even more weeds will grow.”

So instead of digging them out of your soil, Simon said he’d come up with an alternative plan to keep them at bay.
The advocate for non-digging gardening then said: “Instead, cover the beds with recycled cardboard.
“And then add compost on top.”
Simon could then be seen adding a wheelbarrow full of compost over the cardboard and spreading it out evenly so it was fully covered and level.
He went on to say: “Then plant into the compost/ cardboard – your soil will be healthier and you will have less weeds.”
The reason for this is that Simon said it’s easier to manage. He explained: “Easier than trying to dig it out.
“And easier to pull out from the loose compost if any grows through without snapping roots.”
But don’t just take Simon’s word for it – his loyal 623k followers were also quick to explain why they’d come round to the simple but effective idea.
