WHEN it comes to washing clothes, most of us just chuck a load in the washing machine with a generous dose of washing powder and fabric softener.

But according to a cleaning whizz this is a huge mistake which will not only ruin your garments but also the washing machine.

Caroline, a professional organiser from New York, revealed how much detergent to really use, amongst other common cleaning mistakes, on her TikTok.

When it comes to washing clothes, she recommended using only one tablespoon per load.

''Otherwise, too much laundry detergent can strain the machine and actually leave a gross, soapy residue on your clothes,'' she explained.

''Double-check your detergent instructions.''

Amongst the other mistakes, according to Caroline, is putting your toilet brush in the holder right after using it.

Instead, it's recommended to airdry it underneath the toilet seat for a while – this will prevent bacteria from breeding in the holder.

Another common error people make, Caroline pointed out, is cleaning from the ground up – this is counterproductive as any dust that will fall of from the top surfaces will make the floor dirty again.

Instead, clean the top first and then mop and vacuum the floor afterwards.

The fourth mistake is spraying cleaning product directly on surface instead of a paper towel or cleaning cloth.

''This will prevent streaky surfaces and product build-up.''

Once you've made your way to the kitchen, the pro organiser claimed that just wiping down the splattered stains inside the microwave isn't enough.

For an extra clean microwave, add half a cup of vinegar to half a cup of water and place the cup inside the microwave for 2 minutes.

''The steam released from the vinegar will make it easy to remove all of the residue,'' she explained.

Despite the positive feedback, there was also someone who didn't think the recommended amount of detergent was enough: ''I agree with all except the laundry detergent.

''I need more than a tablespoon.''

''A tablespoon? Really?

A viewer added: ''Don't use bleach products on your toilets, this ruins the porcelain which can lead to brown streaks.''

One concerned user wrote: ''Yep, I’m worried about bacteria on a toilet brush because I MIGHT accidentally drink from the toilet; & I DON’T want toilet brush funk to make me sick.''
