Thanks to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic precautions, most people have spent an increased amount of time at home, watching more movies and TV shows than ever before. In November 2020, The Queen’s Gambit became Netflix’s “most-watched scripted limited series,” per Variety. Just two months later, Bridgerton became the most-watched program ever on Netflix, according to Deadline. In short, there is a lot of quality entertainment to consume these days. The Queen’s Gambit‘s lead Anya Taylor-Joy was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in the miniseries, as reported by CBS News. She also scored a nod for her role in the movie Emma.
Unfortunately for Taylor-Joy, Rosamund Pike won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy. But Taylor-Joy did win for portraying Beth Harmon in The Queen’s Gambit. And it appears she might have had an inkling she was going to win since she completed her Golden Globes look with some nail art inspired by the Netflix series. Or perhaps she just likes incorporating a theme into her manicures? Regardless, the nails were almost as big of a hit as Taylor-Joy’s acting.
Anya Taylor-Joy had Queen's Gambit-themed nails
When Anya Taylor-Joy accepted her Golden Globe, she made some hand gestures during her speech, which showcased her manicure inspired by The Queen’s Gambit. Taylor-Joy’s manicurist Kim Truong shared a close-up photo of the actress’s nails, which included chess piece nail art and a mention of the book Modern Chess Openings, which Taylor-Joy’s character Beth Harmon read on the show.
As of this writing, the Golden Globe winner has not publicly commented on her thematic manicure. However, there were some fans who loved the attention to detail, which one Twitter user described as “so cute.” Another person declared that Taylor-Joy “manifested chess aura all over.” That makes sense since Taylor-Joy and her onscreen persona Beth both have a knack for winning major competitions. Will she continue to sport manicures that are in theme with her work? This could be the start to a special tradition. Or it could just be a one-time thing. Regardless, the manicure is a look that Taylor-Joy will always remember, along with the win itself, of course.
