There are some pieces of information that are probably better left kept to yourself. But we guess no one ever told T.I. that because he recently went on Nazanin Mandi and Nadia Moham’s podcast Ladies Like Us and told what he probably thought was an anecdote that would make him look like a good father.

Instead, it made fans and celebrities alike accuse him of being controlling and sexist.

T.I. goes to the doctor with his daughter

During the interview, the rapper was asked if he had had the sex talk with his children.

He responded that not only had he had the talk, but he went one step further when it came to his 18-year-old daughter, Deyjah Harris.

“Not only have we had the conversation — we have yearly trips to the gynecologist to check her hymen,” he said. “Yes, I go with her.”

“So we’ll go and sit down and the doctor comes and talk, and the doctor’s maintaining a high level of professionalism,” T.I. said. “He’s like, ‘You know, sir, I have to, in order to share information’ — I’m like, ‘Deyjah, they want you to sign this so we can share information. Is there anything you would not want me to know? See, Doc? Ain’t no problem.’”

The doctors have tried to tell T.I. that the hymen can be broken in a variety of ways besides sex, but he didn’t want to listen.

“And so then they come and say, ‘Well, I just want you to know that there are other ways besides sex that the hymen can be broken like bike riding, athletics, horseback riding, and just other forms of athletic physical activity,’” he said. “So I say, ‘Look, Doc, she don’t ride no horses, she don’t ride no bike, she don’t play no sports. Just check the hymen, please, and give me back my results expeditiously.’”

Celebrities respond to T.I.’s virginity testing

Checking a person’s hymen to make sure they have not been sexually active is often referred to as virginity testing.

Rapper, Iggy Azalea, who used to be signed to T.I’s label, Grand Hustle, condemned the rapper’s actions.

“Unfortunately, he is dead serious,” she tweeted.

“Really I wish the women who interviewed him would have said something to him. He has serious control issues with women in all aspects of his life & needs therapy.”

Actress Ellen Barkin also noted that hymens don’t always break when a person starts having sex.

“I have bad news for T.I.,” she tweeted. “After 6 months of vaginal sex…my hymen broke.”

Planned Parenthood responds

Virginity testing has been condemned by a number of health organizations, including Planned Parenthood.

“Some people think you can tell if someone’s had sex before if their hymen is stretched open,” the organization tweeted in response to T.I. “But that’s not the case. Say it with us: YOU CAN’T TELL IF SOMEONE’S HAD SEX BY THE WAY THEIR HYMEN LOOKS OR FEELS.”

“Some people just naturally have hymens that are more open,” Planned Parenthood continued. “And many other activities besides sex can stretch your hymen — like riding a bike, doing sports, or putting something in your vagina (like a tampon). Once your hymen is stretched open, it can’t grow back.”
