Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher like to have fun in everything that they do in their marriage, including building a house. So, when the pair worked for five years on their dream home, a modern farmhouse, they knew they had to include some fun elements.

While Kunis and Kutcher certainly have the means to build an ostentatious mansion, that wasn’t what they wanted.

“We wanted a home, not an estate,” Kunis said in the cover story for Architectural Digest.

So, the two decided to build a farmhouse on the six-acre property, which they have named KuKu Farms.  

“We wanted the house to look like an old barn, something that had been here for decades, that was then converted into a house. But it also had to feel modern and relevant,” Kutcher added.

They made pinterest boards

 Before breaking ground on their new home, the two decided to make separate Pinterest boards to get a feel for their styles.

“Building a house from the ground up is no small thing. This was either going to make us or break us,” Kunis said.

But their boards ended up being in sync with one another, and made it pretty clear that they would enlist the help of architect Howard Backen, who is known for his modern farmhouses.

“When we looked at each other’s boards, 90 percent of the images we selected were the same, and most of the houses we pinned were designed by Howard,” Kutcher said.

Though Kunis and Kutcher wanted their new home to be a modern, rustic farmhouse, they had a few old pieces that they wanted to bring from their old home that didn’t quite fit the theme.

The biggest pieces were a set of silver throne chairs that Kutcher got from a trip to India and a regal 10-foot crystal chandelier.

“I got this job because I promised I could make a home for those, shall we say, formidable pieces,” AD100 interior designer Vicky Charles of Charles & Co told the outlet.

Charles was able to put the chairs in the primary bathroom and the chandelier in the entertainment pavilion.

“We thought it would be funny to have this incredibly opulent thing hanging in a barn,” Kunis said. “It kind of takes the piss out of the property.”

The property is an actual farm

Kutcher and Kunis weren’t just interested in the farmhouse aesthetic. The two actually wanted the land to be sustainable for themselves and their kids, Wyatt and Dimitri.

“They were out there with us, as genuine members of the design team, for every step of this long and complicated process,” Stephanie Gerwin, Backen’s associate said of the actors.

The house is powered by photovoltaics and it’s solar array actually produces more power than the property needs.

“Ashton and Mila are concerned about the quality of the soil, the purity of the food they eat and the water they drink,” Backen said. “The ideals of sustainability and regenerative farming aren’t just abstract concepts to them.”

Ultimately, all of the aspects of Kutcher and Kunis’ dreams came together to make a peaceful place for them to raise their children.

“To feel tranquility in a space, everything needs to be in order. If the world around you isn’t in order, it’s hard to get your brain in order,” Kutcher said. “When we’re in our home, the world just makes sense.”
