Meghan Markle has made a concerted effort to keep her relationship with her family private—despite her father Thomas Markle talking about her with the press, accusing her of “ghosting” him, and staging paparazzi shoots. And while most of the duchess’ chat with Oprah centered on her life with Prince Harry and their decision to step down from senior royal duties, she also spoke a bit about her dad, as well as her half-sister, Samantha Markle.

Meghan told Oprah “I’m just trying to decide if I’m comfortable even talking about that,” adding that she did feel betrayed by her dad when he lied about calling the paparazzi ahead of the royal wedding—and when she offered to send a security team if he’d just tell her the truth—even thought it might mean Archie wouldn’t get protection one day.

“Me saying, ‘if we use this to protect you we wont be able to protect our own children one day….I’m talking about your grandchildren,'” she said, adding “Everyone has accountability. Look [the tabloids] hunted my mom down. You’ve never heard her say a word. She’s remained in silent dignity for four years watching me go through this.”
