Louise Minchin is not only known for presenting but she is also a keen triathlete, who regularly incorporates fitness into her daily health regimen. The former BBC Breakfast has been living with Raynaud’s disease all of her life – a condition affecting blood circulation.

The 54-year-old opened up about the challenges she has faced as a triathlete as she urged the nation to keep fit in a bid to feel better, physically and mentally.

The TV star has taken on multisport races which consist of swimming, cycling, and running over various distances.

Louise recalled the moment she was unable to move her fingers and toes during training.

She explained: “I’ve had [Raynaud’s disease] my whole life. Basically, in my hands and feet the blood circulation is not very good. And in triathlon that’s really hard because a lot of the swimming is in open water.

“So very often, I have a swim with hands that are completely numb and feet that are completely numb. I know I can swim with hands that are numb. So I don’t worry about it.

“I know they will eventually get warm.”

The mum-of-two talked about living with Raynaud’s disease and added it is still “not under control” as she addressed keeping fit.

“I wouldn’t say it’s something that is under control. It’s something I just deal with,” Louise added.

Her comments come as she teamed up with David Lloyd Clubs to inspire the nation’s over 50s to keep active and to set fitness goals.

Louise, who has been married to her husband David Minchin for over two decades, has credited her other half with overcoming a recent fitness challenge, as she ventured into the “scary section” of the gym.

She explained: “We do workout together. We started recently actually. I know, especially in your 50s as well, something I’m really focused on is weights, strength training and conditioning.

“In the last six months, we have done strength and conditioning with a trainer together and now we go into the bit – which I used to think was the scary section of the gym where the weights are – and I do weights with him. It’s really fun.”

She went on: “It’s about having somebody around you. I do more because he does it with me and he definitely only does it because I’m going.

“It’s definitely important to get your team around.”

Louise is now encouraging the nation’s over 50s to stay active and set fitness goals to maintain their health as she addressed the benefits of regular exercise.

“What’s interesting about the research David Llyod has done, is over two-thirds of people have a specific fitness goal,” she commented. “I know I do but I didn’t know that I was an exception.”

She continued: “Loads of over 50s are realising that we need to invest time in ourselves and in our physicality in order to make life better. Better living moving forward.

“I think you get to a stage where you either make two choices – you sit on the sofa and that’s what you’re going to do or get out there and enjoy yourself. For many of us, the evidence shows that we’re doing that and setting specific goals to go for. I just love it.”

Louise added: “It doesn’t matter what your goal is – at the moment I’ve just come back from having an injury and I’m doing Couch to 5k again. It could be that. It could be a big or small goal.”

TV Broadcaster Louise Minchin has teamed up with David Lloyd Clubs to inspire the nation’s over 50s to go after whatever goal they set and show that age has no limits when it comes to fitness.
