Finding Alice: Keeley Hawes and Joanna Lumley star in trailer

Finding Alice actress Keeley Hawes, 44, said she wasn’t aware what Succession’s script entailed and admitted she found his character “weird and odd” when watching the show as a fan. Matthew McFadyen, 46, has been playing Tom Wambsgans in the HBO series since 2018.

In the show, Tom attempts to be strategic after becoming infatuated with the Roy family’s power and prestige.

But with his desires to be as successful, he lacks confidence and often humiliates himself in the process.

Discussing her spouse’s character, Keeley said: “It was so odd because I knew what he was doing but I hadn’t read the script, so I watched it along with everyone else, going, ‘Oh my god, he’s so weird and odd’.

“It was actually a really lovely surprise – he’s played Mr Darcy and other brooding roles and suddenly there was this strange guy there.

“I can watch it as a fan and enjoy his performance,” she added on The Graham Norton show.

Since joining the show, Tom has done many questionable things including squealing with pleasure when his wife Shiv Roy (Sarah Snook), handed him a prenuptial agreement.

He also dragged his naive cousin Greg (Nicholas Braun) into a criminal cover-up to keep his hands clean.

In a previous interview, Matthew agreed some of his moments had been cringey and revealed which of his scenes still makes him wince.

Matthew said he found his awkward robot dance after Shiv’s brother, Kendall (Jeremy Strong) ordered him to be the C3PO to his Darth Vader “excruciating”.

He told the Chicago Tribune: “That was excruciating. If I have to do something really horrifying, there is a sort of a**-clenching where you think, ‘God almighty. Thank God I’m only doing this on set’.”

The actor has also starred in the likes of Spooks, Pride and Prejudice, Mr. Darcy, Ripper Street and most recently ITV drama Quiz, which sees him portray Major Charles Ingram.

Keeley and Matthew tied the knot in 2004 and they share two children together; Maggie and Ralph.

The actress also has 20-year-old son Myles with her ex-husband Spencer McCallum.

The pair were married for three years from 2001 to 2004.

Following their divorce, she married Matthew in the same year.

Last year, the actress said she struggled to switch off and have downtime from her busy workload, but said this wasn’t the same for her spouse.

She told Red Magazine: “If I had a spare day or a spare evening, I would write a to-do list. Just leave it alone!

“It is okay to do nothing.

“Matthew is somebody who has always been much better at that; just sort of being and not having to fill the time.”

The Graham Norton show airs tonight at 10.45pm on BBC One.
