Kate Ferdinand admitted her relationship with exercise hasn't always been healthy, and her relationship with Rio Ferdinand made her reassess what was important.

The star credited Rio and his children Lorenz, 13, Tate, 11, and Tia, eight, for changing her mindset with her body, telling OK!, “They made me realise what’s important and what isn’t.

“Going to the gym isn’t the be-all and end-all. Yes, it makes me feel better, but the pressure to go was only causing more anxiety and stress.”

The 28 year old continued, “I always felt like I didn’t look good and battled with body dysmorphia, but I’ve rethought what is important. It’s been a life-changing few years in so many ways.”

While now she works out “four to five times a week” as it makes her “feel happier”, she states, “I don't force myself though.” This is a different attitude to the one she's had in the past, “I’d continue to go when I was ill, and run myself down even more. I haven’t been to the gym in three days. I know that doesn’t sound like a long time, but there was a time I was going every day. It used to be an obsessive thing, but in the last few years I’ve learned to do what’s right for me.”

Kate and Rio, 41, invited OK! to celebrate their special day when they wed in Turkey in a three-day extravaganza in September last year. She left the former footballer in tears when she walked down the aisle with Rio’s three children by her side, and says the kids call her a “bonus mum” – after they lost their own mum Rebecca to breast cancer in 2015.

Being a positive role model for the children is “important”, adding, “It’s all about being balanced in everything. We don’t go too far one way with anything. We like to eat chocolate and snacks, but we also like to eat healthy snacks.”

Kate recently opened up just how much husband Rio means to her, crediting him for “saving” her.

The former reality star said she was struggling with anxiety and panic attacks when she met the football pundit, 41, who was also struggling after becoming a widower after his wife Rebecca Ellison passed away from breast cancer in 2015.

Kate, who is now co-parenting Rio’s three children, said he and the kids helped her “love herself.” Speaking to The Sun, she said: “We really did save each other.
