Home Alone 2 star Brenda Fricker has opened up on what it’s like spending Christmas alone and she admits it can make for a ‘dark’ time.

The actress, 75, who is known for playing the Central Park pigeon lady in Home Alone sequel Lost In New York, revealed that the festive holiday can be a difficult time for her – especially as she lives by herself.

Following new tier 4 restrictions in place in London and the South East, many people across England are being forced to go without their Christmas plans, as households are no longer allowed to mix in previously planned bubbles.

It will mean that some single households face spending Christmas alone and faced with that prospect, Oscar-winning star Brenda opened up on how she is feeling.

‘I’m doing well and hanging on like everyone else,’ Brenda said, before admitting: ‘I’m 75 now and I would be lying if I said it would be a nice and happy Christmas because I’m old and I live alone.’

‘It can be very dark,’ she continued. ‘I turn the phone off and put the blinds down. I do pre-record some good programmes and I have my dog.’

‘I get myself through it that way,’ she insisted.

The Irish movie talent then revealed that she actually finds being on her own for New Year’s Eve much more ‘difficult’ than spending Christmas by herself.

Fans will recognise Brenda from Home Alone 2, where she starred alongside Macaulay Culkin who plays Kevin McCallister in the Home Alone movies.

Home Alone 2: Lost In New York was released in 1992 – two years after the original – and came three years after Brenda won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Christy Brown’s mother in biopic My Left Foot.

My Left Foot follows the story of writer and artist Brown – played by Daniel-Day Lewis – an Irish man born with cerebral palsy who could only control his left foot.

Brenda also starred in BBC series Casualty over the years up until 2010 as Megan Roach.
