61-year-old former football champ Gary Lineker had been glued to the screen for comic Ricky Gervais’ latest offering but ended up bowing out of viewing before the end. However, hours later, the Match of the Day frontman had a different story to tell as he returned to Netflix’s After Life.

Feels like the right decision…unless I die

Gary Lineker

His original tweet read: “Intended to binge watch #AfterLife3 last night, but I’m sorry to disappoint you, @rickygervais, I stopped after episode 4.

“I just didn’t want it to be over that quickly. Great to have something to look forward to.

“Feels like the right decision…unless I die, I guess.”

He made the quip regarding the comedy-drama’s storyline, in which a man, Tony (played by Gervais), opts out of committing suicide following the death of his wife, instead vowing to stay alive for those who love him.

It seemed as though Gary had decided to stay away from binging on the episodes, but within a matter of mere hours, he was back on Twitter with a different story.

“Oh @rickygervais, the last episode of #AfterLife3 is absolutely beautiful,” he exclaimed, having apparently continued with the series until the end.

“So poignant. So funny. Just perfect. Well played.”

Golden Globe winner Ricky had played a major role in the action, writing, directing and starring in it.

It seemed as though Gary had been unable to resist watching his idol right to the end.

Ricky’s only contribution to the conversation was to thank him for his comments with a simple thumbs-up emoji.

@MikeRooster4 agreed with Gary’s original intention to limit his viewing, stating: “I’m with you on that, Gary, only one better: I am limiting myself to one episode per WEEK.

“I have still cried though, after each of the 2 so far.”

Meanwhile @FarmerUKr took the conversation deeper, praising: “As someone who lost his wife to cancer almost twenty years ago, I could not believe how well and deeply Ricky could write about my experience and that of many others.

“It really spoke deeply to me and is an outstanding piece of work. I am sure it is of help to many. Thank you.

Shreya_Elle then shared her own experience, describing: “Absolutely love the series. Helped me to grieve the loss of my mother and Ricky Gervais is incredible in that.”

Liamdbergin chimed in: “I think it’s a difficult watch if you like me have a terminal [cancer] diagnosis, but it’s so well done.”

Finally, @IRetweetart had some advice for Gary as a parting shot: “It’s worth the wait Gary.

“Unfortunately I have no will power so had to watch it all.

The final closing scenes will make you cry harder than Gazza or if Walker’s ever cancel your contract.” [sic]
