Dame Barbara Windsor’s widow, Scott Mitchell, 59, has now spoken out on the cruel abuse he received following her death on December 10 2020. Scott said one online troll went as far as accusing him of playing “the long game” with the late Peggy Mitchell actress.

Scott and Barbara married in April 2000, despite facing scrutiny over their 27-year age-gap, and were together until the TV icon’s death in 2020.

However, the vitriol did not stop there for Scott, who was continually accused of only being with the late Carry On and EastEnders star for her money.

The accusations were aggravated after Companies House were notified the star had died, and her and Scott’s joint company moved into his sole name – something that is standard practice.

After the update was made public, Scott said he received “shocking” comments from people, including one that was “was above the line”.

He said: “I don’t look at comments but for some reason, one was above the line and someone had said, ‘I see the long game paid off’.”

Laughing, Scott continued: “After 27 years and everything we went through together, it was shocking that someone could actually think like that.

“But it showed me that whatever you do, there’s always going to be someone critical.

“So I thought, ‘Just tell your story like Barbara said you should’,” Scott added to The Sun.

Scott opened up on Barbara’s final days in a moving statement released following her death after battling Alzheimer’s.

In the heartfelt message, Scott said Barbara’s last days before her death were “full of drama”.

Scott said: “Her passing was from Alzheimer’s/dementia and Barbara eventually died peacefully and I spent the last seven days by her side.

“Myself, her family and friends will remember Barbara with love, a smile and affection for the many years of her love, fun, friendship and brightness she brought to all our lives and the entertainment she gave to so many thousands of others during her career.

“Barbara’s final weeks were typical of how she lived her life. Full of humour, drama and a fighting spirit until the end.

“It was not the ending that Barbara or anyone else living with this very cruel disease deserve.

“I will always be immensely proud of Barbara’s courage, dignity and generosity dealing with her own illness and still trying to help others by raising awareness for as long as she could.”

The actress’ husband was joined by many of her former EastEnders co-stars in paying tribute to her.

A representative for actor Steve McFadden, who plays Dame Barbara’s on-screen son Phil Mitchell, told PA he was “devastated” by her death.

Danniella Westbrook, who played Dame Barbara’s on-screen daughter Sam Mitchell on EastEnders, tweeted: “MY HEART IS BROKEN. Bar you will always be in my heart forever. Good bye, I LOVE YOU XXX RIP Barbara WINDSOR.”

Patsy Palmer, who played Bianca Jackson on EastEnders, wrote on Instagram: “I’m extremely sad to hear that my friend ‘Dame’ Barbara Windsor has passed away. I’m sitting here thinking of the 100’s of memories we shared.”

Patsy added: “Too many to comprehend. We were like family for a long time, ups downs, ins and outs but you will never meet a more professional actress than Babs.”
