Graham Norton struggles to stand and stumbles on the street as worse for wear star waits for his car after boozy BAFTA TV Awards… after revealing he cut down on drinking during lockdown

  • The bleary-eyed Irishman lost out on the gong for Comedy Entertainment Programme
  • Graham previously revealed that the COVID lockdowns in 2020 saw him cut back on drinking, after he realised how much he was consuming
  • The TV star owns a New Zealand-based Invivo wine label
  • He explained how he understood why people abstained from alcohol for health reasons ‘but  if it’s not affecting your work and you’re not ill, then why not?’

It was a star-studded night at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday as the famous faces of the small screen celebrated the BAFTA TV Awards.

And among them was veteran presenter Graham Norton, who appeared to be struggling to stand after partying the night away in the capital.

The bleary-eyed Irishman, whose comedy chat show lost out on the gong for Comedy Entertainment Programme, looked dapper in a brown suit, pristine white shirt and a bow tie.

Graham, 59, was captured scrolling through his phone and biting his nails as he tried to arrange transport home.

Video footage shows the BBC star appearing unsteady on his feet whilst waiting for his ride, occasionally stumbling as he tried to maintain his balance.

An eager fan later approached him with a pad and pen, with an obliging Graham proceeding to sign his autograph.

When safely in a taxi, the TV star, who has five BAFTAs to his name for The Graham Norton Show, kept a face mask baring the word ‘nerve’ dangling from one ear, seemingly forgetting to sport the safety covering in its entirety.

Graham previously revealed that the COVID lockdowns in 2020 saw him cut back on drinking, after he realised how much he was consuming.

‘If people are coming around, you kind of think, ‘Wow, they really drank a lot, they were some booze hounds in last night,’ he told the New Zealand Herald in October 2020.

‘But when it’s just you, when those cases of wine are empty, you’re like, ‘I wonder where that wine went?’

‘It doesn’t take Jessica Fletcher to figure out where the wine went – it went in my big gob.’

‘Now I’m back in London, in work mode. Now I’m limiting myself to two drinks a night – unless I don’t,’ he said at the time.

The TV star, who co-owns a New Zealand-based Invivo wine label, also explained how he understood why people abstained from alcohol for health reasons ‘but if you’re just doing it for its own sake – really?

‘Look, if bits of you start falling off, then maybe something went wrong. But if it’s not affecting your work and you’re not ill, then why not? I mean, we’ve got to do something.’

Career: Graham lost out on Sunday night to Mo Gilligan, who snatched the Comedy Entertainment Programme

On Sunday night, it was Mo Gilligan who snatched the Comedy Entertainment Programme accolade for The Latish Show, beating The Graham Norton Show.

The comedian, 34, gave an emotional speech after learning of his award.

He said: ‘Oh s**t I’m so nervous. I have to big up Channel 4. In 2017 when I got offered a show my mental health wasn’t in the best place. Channel 4 brought me into this big building. They trusted me and let me be myself and helped me to bring black boy joy to the screens.’

Elsewhere, Susanna Reid was in great spirits as she happily relaxed in her taxi after the glitzy ceremony, ready for her early start on Good Morning Britain on Monday.

Strictly presenter Tess Daly also made a giddy exit, looking gorgeous in her green gown as she was driven home.

Susanna, 51, was looking stunning in her belted black jumpsuit and heels as she caught a taxi home from Royal Festival Hall.

Closing her eyes for a second on the back seat, the star looked ready for bed ahead of her early alarm on Monday.

Tess, 53, meanwhile wowed in her green midi dress, smiling as she was driven away.

Tess’ show Strictly Come Dancing missed out on the Best Entertainment Show gong on Sunday night, losing to Ant and Dec who won for Saturday Night Takeaway.

Presented by Olivia Colman – the Geordie duo, both 46, were delighted to scoop the first award of the night, which marked the fourth time they have won in the category and the eight time they have been nominated in it.

Meanwhile Susanna’s show GMB was nominated in the News Coverage category for their reports on Shamima Begum, but lost out to ITV News at Ten: Storming of the Capitol.

Elsewhere prison series Time and pandemic drama Help had successful nights – while notable snubs included Channel 4 series It’s A Sin which won no awards despite 11 nominations.

Glam couple: Michelle Keegan and Mark Wright were still looking stunning as they caught a cab back to their hotel

Celeb turn out: Stephen Mulhern clambered his way on to the back seat of his car after the star-studded evening at Royal Festival Hall

The awards recognised and celebrated the very best in television craft and television programmes broadcast in the UK in 2021 and the event was back to having a full live audience after the pandemic.

It’s A Sin was the night’s big snub, failing to win in any of the five categories it was nominated in. The Channel 4 drama, written and created by Queer As Folk and Doctor Who screenwriter Russell T Davies, tracked a group of gay men and their friends as they navigated the UK’s HIV/Aids crisis throughout the 80s and early 90s.

The show’s 11 nominations, which comprised of five in the craft categories and six in the television awards categories, included nods for Davies in the writer drama category, as well as a leading actor nomination for singer Olly Alexander for his role as Ritchie Tozer.
