Jonny Clayton was up against a vocal crowd, as well as Gary Anderson, as he breezed into the semi-final of the Premier League Darts in Aberdeen.

As expected, Anderson was backed to the hilt by a vociferous audience in the Granite City's P&J Live venue. In contrast, Clayton was regularly booed when he took to the oche, but certainly didn’t let it affect him as he defeated the out-of-form Scot 6-2. The Ferret was supreme as Flying Scotsman struggled to build any momentum, despite his home advantage.

While the boos didn’t bother Clayton, they didn’t go down well with many fans watching at home, who felt the Welshman should have been afforded more respect, with many taking to social media to air their views.

“Booing for clayton???? Both great players,” posted Nancy Deproost while Mike Pitts added: “Hahahahah shame Scotland, hopefully you’ll learn to respect players from outside Scotland yeah??”

“That crowd is abysmal. Clayton is such a nice guy,” said Kim Bostyn while @ryangoIdy8 agreed: “Crowd were shocking.”

William Crawford pointed out: “How bad is Anderson playing atm” while Dylan Gill questioned Anderson’s presence in the Premier League, tweeting: “Anderson getting in this PL over any of Cross, De Sousa, Van Den Bergh, Humphries and Searle should be a criminal offense. Said it from the start and my claim becomes more correct each week. Id be raging if i was any of those other named players.”

The result left Anderson rooted to the foot of the table, with time running out for the former world champion to climb into top-four contention.

Clayton, meanwhile, is on the high, with his victory sending him to the top of the table ahead of the final of the night’s quarter-final between Gerwyn Price and Michael van Gerwen. The winner of the Price-van-Gerwen match-up will face James Wade, who defeated Michael Smith 6-5 in the last four.

Clayton can expect more of the same from the Aberdeen crown in the semi-finals, where he will face Scotland-born Peter Wright, who beat Joe Cullen 6-5 in a thrilling quarter-final.
