Unlike the rest of us, senior members of the Royal Family don’t have to worry about visiting their school’s career advisor or figuring out what their future may hold as their professional life is already laid out for them.
And though the stress and uncertainty of forging a career path is taken away from them, that doesn’t mean that they haven’t thought about what they would do if their lives were a little more ordinary and a lot less royal.
From military pilots to business owners, here’s what life for The Firm would look like outside of the Royal Family.

Prince William – military helicopter pilot
Having joined the Household Cavalry as Second Lieutenant in 2006 before being promoted to Lieutenant, Prince William pursued a career in the military. Passing his training and exams, in 2010 he joined the RAF Valley in Anglesey.
Though his career was going from strength to strength, the Queen wasn’t as happy about his work on the front line.
Appearing in the Channel 5 documentary William and Kate: Too Good to be True, Simon Vigar explained: “William was desperate to stay in the military and of course he trained to be a helicopter pilot.
“But in the end, he wasn't allowed anywhere near the frontline. The ultimate boss said no because he is second-in-line to the throne.”
Kate Middleton – professional tennis player
It’s no secret that Kate Middleton is a huge tennis fan – she’s frequently seen at Wimbledon as she is patron of the Lawn Tennis Association.
But her passion extends beyond watching the sport and the Duchess of Cambridge is a keen tennis player herself. So much so, Kate even had a tennis court built at Anmer Hall.
In the documentary Sue Barker: Our Wimbledon in 2017, the 39 year old said: “[Tennis] inspires young people including myself.
“Every time Wimbledon is on I am thinking, 'Yes, I could do the same’ and get out the racket. Sadly, not the same results.”
Or a fashion buyer!
After leaving university, Kate had a career as an accessories fashion buyer for fashion brand Jigsaw – and, unsurprisingly, it was something she was extremely good at.
In an interview with the Evening Standard in 2003, the brand’s co-founder, Belle Robinson, had nothing but praise for the Duchess of Cambridge.
“I have to say, I was so impressed by her,” she said.
“She sat in the kitchen at lunchtime and chatted with everyone from the van drivers to the accounts girls. She wasn’t precious.”
Given that anything Kate wears has the potential to sell out in a matter of hours, a career in fashion seems like an obvious fit!
Prince Harry – tour guide in Africa
Africa has a special place in Prince Harry’s heart, with the prince calling it his “second home” and it turns out that it’s always been a dream of his to live and work there.
Having met the Duke of Sussex in 2006 while in Lesotho, royal reporter Rebecca English explained how prior to settling down with Meghan, the 37 year old’s “biggest wish was to go off and live in Africa.”
Writing in the Daily Mail, she added that: “‘I would love to just go and work as a tour guide, you know? Just go off into the bush and be me,’ he would say.”
Meghan Markle – sweet shop owner
She may have made waves in the world of acting, but Meghan Markle had other plans on her mind – to establish her own lollipop business.

Prince George – policeman
Though he’s third in line to the throne, the eight year old has different ambitions.
During a reception at Kensington Palace honouring Scotland Yard in 2018, Prince William revealed that his son was fascinated with the police.
Joking with the Duke of Cambridge, Police Commissioner Jayne Richardson told William that they were looking for more officers, to which he replied: “[George] is obsessed, actually, by the police… cars, toys, everything.”
