Simon McCoy hits back at idea of a female James Bond

Speculation surrounding the next James Bond actor has been rife ever since Daniel Craig announced No Time to Die would be his final stint as the famous spy. And among the stars tipped to take on the role are the likes of Idris Elba, Rege-Jean Page, James Norton and Susanne Jones among many others. However, with rumours surrounding a female actor possibly taking on the role for the first time, GB News stars Kirsty Gallacher and Simon McCoy weighed in with their thoughts – and the former BBC News anchor wasn’t exactly on board with Ian Fleming’s iconic creation being played by the opposite sex.
“James Bond, fictional character, yes,” Simon began during the discussion on The Great British Breakfast on Thursday. “But it is a character written by Ian Fleming,
“He was a white, English man. Now, I’m sounding an old grump here, we’re talking about people of colour, we’re talking about Idris Elba, other people -“
“Rege-Jean Page” GB News entertainment reporter Josh Rom chipped in before Simon continued: “And women also.”
Josh then took the reins of the discussion to explain the latest comments from those closely connected to Bond regarding the possibility of a woman taking on the role.
Daniel Craig had already spoken publicly about the rumours, telling Radio Times: “There should simply be better parts for women and actors of colour.
“Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, but for a woman?”
GB News’ Josh said: “Well, there is an interesting discussion about women. Very much so. So Barbara Broccoli [producer] has said that James Bond is a female character – sorry, James Bond is a male character.”
After correcting himself, Simon jumped back into the debate: “Of course, it is a male character.”
Kirsty then interjected: “Simon is saying you have to stick with it, that’s what it said in the novel, in the books and that is that.”
Making his stance on the issue clear, Simon commented: “It’s a bit like saying a bloke should play the Queen.
“There’s a moment where you’ve got to stick to the script, isn’t there?” he added.
“I am talking like an old grump,” Simon joked before Kirsty argued: “Yeah but then we can talk about acting capabilities and who would be the best.

“I think Rege-Jean Page would be amazing but James Norton is probably my favourite here.
“I think he’s the great, great bet for this at 3/1,” Kirsty added before Simon’s eye was caught by Suranne Jones’s odds.
The former BBC presenter jumped back into the discussion, saying in disbelief: “Suranne Jones is 9/1.”
Josh then joked that Suranne would be the first Bond to ever come from Coronation Street before pointing out the title 007 could well go to any agent, not just Bond.
Weighing in with their own thoughts, a number of GB News viewers appeared to side with Simon’s point of view.
Leo argued on Twitter: “There is no reason why 008 should not be a woman, of colour, of any background. But 007 is a globally known character with a back story e.g. Scottish aristocrat, white male, stiff upper lip etc. That should be maintained in specifically 007 films.”
Sharry added: “James Bond and his 007 number is male it’s in the detail a female bond would just ruin the franchise.”
While Dot vented: “Fgs! It’s an existing character who is popular because of the character. Write a new equivalent and stop destroying an existing iconic and very successful creation.” (Sic)
