Kerry Katona has said gruelling show Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins helped her finally gain closure on ex-husband George Kay's death.

The Atomic Kitten star can currently be seen taking part in the tough Channel 4 reality series alongside celebrities including Alexandra Burke, Ulrika Jonsson and Jake Quickenden, facing challenges such as walking a tightrope between cliffs and rescuing a hostage from a gas chamber.

Known for being as mentally tough as it is physically, Kerry, 40, has said the tasks helped her to find peace with some of the tough experiences she has had in life.

In one scene, she broke down in the mirror room – where contestants can reflect on their feelings – as she talks about the death of her third husband George, who passed away from a drug overdose aged 39 in 2019.

Kerry had known George since school but was married to him from 2014 to 2017 and says the relationship was abusive, telling how she and her daughter once had to shut themselves in a cupboard for their own safety.

Talking about her reaction on the show, Kerry said: "I was really angry at him because George died, he just died. He put me through so much s***, scared the s*** out of us, and then just died.

"There was a lot of anger built up there. It's almost like I was able to grieve George’s death. I felt it was a safe place to bring up George's death, which is really weird.

"It was one of the best things I've ever done. It gave me so much closure on my life, on me. I needed to close that door on George’s death because I hadn’t grieved him properly. So when I got there it all just came flooding out."

George's death was not the only issue that Celebrity SAS helped Kerry deal with, as she also spoke about her past drug use.

She said: "It made me finally realise I don’t need to prove myself to anyone. You know, I was doing loads of drugs and could have died. I got through that. I went to rehab several times, I got through it. And I got through my relationships.

"So no, I don't need to prove anything to anybody, but I only came to that realisation sitting on that bed. I just remember sitting there thinking I don't need to subject myself to this to prove anything to anyone."

Kerry also made a new friend on the show – Ulrika Jonsson, who she found had had many of the same life experiences after surviving an abusive relationship.

She said: "Ulrika Jonsson is one of my bestest friends in the world now. I absolutely adore her. We have so much in common. We've both been through quite a lot of the same s*** together. I absolutely adore her."

Ulrika agreed, saying: "I really bonded with Kerry, I think we've had a lot of shared lived experiences, with relationships and children and whatever. So the second I saw Kerry, I felt a little bit of relief and I found a tiny bit of comfort."

Celebrity SAS Who Dares Wins continues on Channel 4 on Sunday at 9pm.
