Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, are going to be parents of two! The royal couple delighted the world with a surprise pregnancy announcement on Valentine’s Day.
The announcement came with a beautiful pregnancy photo of Meghan and Harry shot at their California home, but there’s much more hidden meaning to the photo than meets the eye.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s pregnancy announcement was shot remotely by a famous friend
Meghan and Harry shared the exciting baby news on Feb. 14, 2021.
“We can confirm that Archie is going to be a big brother. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to be expecting their second child,” a rep confirmed, per People.
In November 2020, Meghan revealed in an essay for The New York Times that she had a miscarriage in July, so fans of the couple are excited to share in the baby bliss. And Meghan and Harry’s bliss is clearly seen in the pregnancy photo.
The image was taken remotely via iPad by Misan Harriman—a good friend of the couple’s who made history as the first Black photographer to shoot the cover the British Vogue’s September issue. He told Vogue that he not only arranged the photo, but he’s also to thank for Meghan and Harry meeting in the first place! He said:
“To be asked to help share this absolute joy after such an unimaginable loss and heartache is a marker of true friendship. Meg reminded me that had I not introduced her to a mutual friend then she wouldn’t have met Harry. I’m grateful for whatever small part I played.”
Meghan Markle’s pregnancy shoot dress has a special connection to a family member
It’s not just the story of how the photo was taken that’s special. In the image, Meghan is laying her head on Harry’s leg with her hand resting on her baby bump. Harry holds Meghan’s head as he gazes down at her. They’re both barefoot on a lawn, and Meghan is wearing a long, white, sleeveless dress.
According to People, the dress is a Carolina Herrera and was designed for Meghan when she was pregnant with Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, born May 6, 2019. So, while Archie is not included in the photo, his parents made sure he was still represented.
The Duchess is also good friends with Carolina Herrera creative director Wes Gordon.
The special meaning behind the date of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s pregnancy announcement
The timing of the announcement couldn’t have been more perfect either. The late Princess Diana and Charles, Prince of Wales announced she was pregnant with Harry on Valentine’s Day in 1984, making Harry and Meghan’s announcement a special shoutout to Archie’s grandmother.
What’s overwhelmingly clear in the photo is Harry and Meghan’s love for each other. Harriman noted that taking this photo only further proved to him that the Sussex royals are soulmates.
“With the tree of life behind them and the garden representing fertility, life and moving forward, they didn’t need any direction, because they are, and always have been, waltzing through life together as absolute soulmates,” he said.
“When you see people who have the connection that they have, it’s like reading the pages of a book,” Harriman continued.
The photographer also said that the photo—from the couple’s body language to the ease of the shoot—shows “their truth.”
Congratulations to the happy family!
