Lily Allen sings about tier two coronavirus lockdown in London
Lily Allen has waded into the school closure debate after it was confirmed by Michael Gove that only primary schools and years 11 and 13 will return to school on January 4 after a recent surge in coronavirus cases. The It’s Not Fair hitmaker took to Twitter and addressed the Government’s decision as she explained children will be spending much of the New Year in isolation.
The 35-year-old reacted to the news as she took to the micro-blogging and posed a question in view of her 5.3 million followers.
Lily shares nine-year-old Ethel and seven-year-old Marnie, with ex-husband Sam Cooper.
The singer penned: “Where do we stand on schools reopening please?
“If the last few weeks of the last term were anything to go by, kids will be spending much of 2021 self-isolating.”

Many social media users flocked to comment on Lily’s post, with some people suggesting that schools should stay open while others admitted they would prefer them to be closed at present.
The singer posted a follow-up response after a social media user said in a now-deleted tweet that children should be in school.
Lily wrote: “I agree, but if one kid in the year gets it (or parent or sibling) then rest of the year has to self isolate for 10 (or is it 14?) days.
“My daughter spent 20 days of December in isolation. What’s better for small kids, no school, or no fresh air?”
Lily’s reply caused a stir, as many people offered their thoughts on school closures.
One person said: “Totally agree, my daughter spent 14 days in October and 14 days in November isolating. She’s 15 and it really got her down not even able to go for a walk and get fresh air.”
Another person remarked: “Schools should be shut and should set up home learning.”
Others disagreed with a social media user commenting: “It’s a difficult subject for some children. Schools can be an escape from toxic home lives or school can be the only place where they get a hot meal a day.”

A fourth person added: “The problem is, how do kids stay at home when parents are at work? It’s not feasible for the majority of people.”
Lily’s comments come after Cabinet minister Michael Gove announced plans to stagger children’s return to school in January as part of their coronavirus strategy.
Mr Gove said: “Our plan is that primary schools will go back.
“But with secondary schools, it will be the case that next week only children in Year 11 and Year 13, that’s those who are doing their GCSEs, their BTECs, their A-levels, will go back.
“Also children of key workers and those who are vulnerable and need the support and care that school can provide.
“Other children in secondary schools won’t go back for a week after that.”
The Government has already confirmed that there are no plans to cancel examinations for next year.
Areas that are currently in Tier 4, schools and colleges will remain open during term time.
