Peaky Blinders has been in our lives for seven years with the violent yet charming Tommy Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy) leading the way. The BBC period drama will return for a sixth season but there will now be a delay in its release. The coronavirus pandemic has meant the show hasn’t been able to film new episodes, therefore Peaky Blinders series six may not be out until late 2021 at the earliest.

The Shelby family has seen plenty of highs and lows throughout the five seasons of Peaky Blinders.

Whenever they have had moments of success, there have been equal amounts of frustration, betrayal and death to bring them back down again.

Tommy has been the person in charge of the Birmingham gang from the very beginning.

While he may not be the eldest of the Shelby siblings, there has been no doubt Tommy is in charge.

How old is Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders?

When the series first started in 2013, Tommy was returning from fighting in the First World War in 1919.

At this point, Tommy was 29-years-old and over the five seasons, 10 years have passed.

Series five begins in the late 1920s, starting just before the turn of the decade with the 1929 Wall Street Crash.

Tommy was born in 1890 and so at the beginning of series five, the gangster is 39-years-old.

He is not the eldest sibling though in the Shelby family.

Arthur Shelby Jr (Paul Anderson) is Tommy’s older brother and in season five is 42-years-old.

But he didn’t want to take over the Peaky Blinders, so the responsibility instead fell to Tommy.

Sadly, it does now seem the pressure of everything which has gone on during the show has finally started to catch up with Tommy.

In series five, there was more of a focus on Tommy’s mental health as he continued to see his dead wife Grace Burgess (Annabelle Wallis).

Tommy seemed more agitated and talked about how his mother had died by suicide.

During the finale, he also found out Michael Gray (Finn Cole) was working against him and so was barman Micky Gibbs (Peter Campion).

However, the last straw was when Tommy’s months of planning had suddenly gone to waste.

Tommy was plotting to assassinate MP Oswald Mosley (Sam Claflin).

But on the day of the assassination attempt at the rally, Mosley was informed of a potential attack and left the building before Tommy even realised.

So the series ended with Tommy screaming and pointing a gun at his own head in frustration.

Could this mean the end of Tommy Shelby in series six?
