MEGHAN Markle split from her first husband after they struggled to cope with a "long distance relationship", a new documentary has revealed.
The Duchess of Sussex, 37, met television producer Trevor Engelson, 42, back in 2004 when she was just starting out in her acting career.
After seven years of dating, the pair tied the knot in a relaxed beach wedding in Jamaica in 2011.
But just two years later, Meghan filed for divorce – citing "irreconcilable differences".
And now a new Channel 5 documentary has revealed the reasons behind the couple's split after nine years together.
Appearing on Meghan Markle: Movies, Marriage & Motherhood, royal correspondent Ashley Pierson revealed that it was the Duchess' flourishing acting career which led to the breakdown of her marriage.
The royal expert said: "When she landed the role in Suits, Meghan became a legitimate bonafide celebrity.
"This was the first time she would have had her name called out on a red carpet. This was the first time she would have been papped.
"So this was a big adjustment for her and it all happened away from home.
Although Suits was set in New York, the majority of the filming took place in Toronto and Meghan moved from the couple's home in LA to the Canadian city just months after she married Trevor.
Ashley added: "Meghan's move to Toronto was a big deal.
"She was very close with her mother Doria and she moved away from home and her friends in LA to go start a new life in Canada."
With Trevor still living in LA, the expert revealed: "The problem with the marriage was the distance.
"As soon as they got married, she got the gig on Suits and she was in Toronto and he was in LA.
"The relationship just didn't' last."
According to Andrew Morton's 2018 biography Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, the Duchess dumped her partner of nine years "totally out of the blue" and returned both her wedding and engagement rings in the post.
One of Trevor's friends – who is referenced in the book- said the producer was left feeling “like he was a piece of something stuck to the bottom of her shoe"
Seven years later, the former actress went on to marry Prince Harry and welcomed her first baby Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor earlier this month.
Meanwhile, just days after the Royal baby's arrival, Trevor married his girlfriend of 18 months Tracey Kurland in a lavish Californian wedding.
What's more, Fabulous Digital exclusively revealed earlier today that Trevor's new heiress wife has told him to "leave ex-wife Meghan Markle in the past" as they "plan to start a family soon".
In more Meghan Markle news, the star's half-sister Samantha has urged the Duchess to let dad Thomas see Archie after he "gave up everything for her".
And Meghan Markle has been warned over clashing with senior royals as Palace keep a "close eye on her", a royal biographer has claimed.
Plus Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have "scaled down" staff at Frogmore Cottage and just rely on "indispensable" gran Doria Ragland.
