It was really only appropriate that the Mother’s Day penultimate Game of Thrones episode was the place and time for the world to say goodbye to Cersei Lannister forever. The queen is dead, having gone out not through a huge fight or dramatic murder of passion (by Arya Stark, Daenerys Targaryen, the list of potential killers goes on), but by poor infrastructure, because sometimes this show does not like to stick to its prophecies.
Cersei died alongside her brother/lover Jaime Lannister after being crushed by the rocks of Red Keep’s cellar during Dany’s full-on “Mad Queen” dragon attack, and Lena Heady has some thoughts about that. The actress has played Cersei for eight seasons, and reading about her death for the first time wasn’t exactly a walk in the park for her. She admitted in a new interview with EW that her first reaction to Cersei’s final scene was “mixed.”
“I wanted her to have some big piece or fight with somebody,” she said. Can I just speak for the rest of the fanbase when I say SAME.
Anyway, Lena was able to get over her initial feelings by talking with Jaime’s actor, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, which is actually pretty cute. “The more we talked about it the more it seemed like the perfect end for her,” Lena said. “They came into the world together and now they leave together.”
Even thought the whole “rocks collapsing on Cersei’s head” thing was v scary, Lena actually said this was “maybe the first time that Cersei has been at peace.”
Well, there you have it. For everyone wondering if Cersei is really dead, the answer is clearly a yes. Long live the queen!
