A woman’s body has been found under a busy roadway in central Melbourne on New Year’s Day.

The woman was found under the Kings Way bridge at Southbank at about 4am on Sunday, according to police.

She was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.

At this stage, there are no details about the woman, including her age or name.

Police remained at the scene at 9am and have cordoned off the area.

The circumstances of the death are yet to be determined and investigations are ongoing.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
