Police are investigating a murder linked to a grisly social media image purporting to show a dead woman — and have taken an upstate man into custody, according to a report Monday.
The victim was found dead outside a car in Utica early Sunday with apparent stabbing wounds, and a Syracuse man was named a person of interest, police told NBC News.
A disturbing but unverified Instagram photo — which appeared to show the woman’s lifeless body — was linked to the crime, police told the station. Cops on Monday were investigating whether the image was authentic.
Instagram said it removed an account with the handle @yesjuliet, registered to a man named Brandon Andrew Clark, according to NBC.
The Instagram post in question read, “I am sorry Bianca” — and showed the image of a lifeless woman with a slashed throat, according to co-ed.com, a news website that obtained the posting before it was removed.
The site also noted Clark is a frequent user of the dark web site 4chan, who posted ominous messages before the slaying.
The bio for his Instagram account read “10/06/1997 – 7/14/19. Just know that I feel no pain now,” according to the news site.
Police said the suspect, who may have been in a relationship with the victim, was injured and hospitalized, according to NBC.
Cops launched an investigation after the parents of either the suspect or the victim reported a concern “about some things that were happening in the relationship,” Lt. Bryan Coromato told the station.
“The female is outside the vehicle, and the male was located outside the vehicle. At this point what occurred and when it occurred is part of the investigation,” Coromato said.
No additional details were released by police, according to NBC.
