Wisconsin’s presidential primary will proceed on Tuesday — despite a last-ditch effort by the governor to postpone voting amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The state Supreme Court ruled 4-2 that Gov. Tony Evers lacked the authority to move the election on his own. Conservatives control the court 5-2, but one of the conservative justices is up for reelection Tuesday and didn’t participate in the ruling.

Hours earlier, Evers, a Democrat, had issued an executive order delaying in-person voting until June 9.

The last-minute order came amid growing criticism about holding the election during a health crisis.

Several poll sites closed because nervous volunteers didn’t want to staff them for fear of catching or spreading the virus.

State Republicans had immediately announced they would go to the Wisconsin Supreme Court to challenge Evers’ order.
